The legal minimum dimensions are usually specified in the fishing regulations or in annexes to these regulations. Holders of fishing rights can tighten these minimum dimensions for their waters for reasons of stock management (conservation). These water-specific dimensions are usually listed in the water certificate. The aim is to ensure that a fish has the opportunity to reproduce at least once in its life in order to preserve the population. The values differ from fish species to fish species - they depend on the growth of the individual species up to sexual maturity and the quantitative population of the fish species. Since fishing law is a matter of the federal states , the regulations also vary.

The length of a fish is determined by the angler measuring it from the tip of its mouth to the very end of the caudal fin . If a caught fish does not have the prescribed minimum size, the angler should carefully put it back into the respective body of water in accordance with his fishing test .
