Closed season

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The closed season (out of date also conservation season ) describes the period that is not hunting season , i.e. H. in which the hunting of wild through the right to hunt and capture of fish by the fishing rights are prohibited by law. The closed season primarily serves to protect animals and is intended to prevent young animals from being taken away from the parent animals they need to raise. A lack of supply of breast milk or other food , inadequate or lack of protection of the young animals from predators lead to the death of the young game.

hunt

As Wild applicable in Germany in the Federal Hunting Law species listed, the legally ownerless apply. Game that is only hunted by hunters during the hunting season is appropriated by those authorized to hunt. The closed seasons of the various game species are primarily based on their species-specific, annually repeated reproduction rhythm, the mating season (→ rut ), the birth and rearing of the young. With exceptions, spring is the core zone of the closed season.

For game that is sick, i.e. game that is required to be shot under animal welfare law and for reasons of national culture , closed seasons for game can be completely denied or canceled. The German states may for boar ( Jägersprache : wild boar , for) wild rabbits , fox (ground game), ringed and collared dove , silver and black-headed gull (game birds) also in the set and breeding seasons determine exceptions. Depending on species, the beginning and duration of the grace period in the Federal Hunting Act and the countries set to be different. It is not mandatory for both parents: If the male parent is not required to raise the young, the closed season for this animal is often different. For example, in the case of roe deer, the male animal - the roebuck - may be hunted, while the female animal - the doe - which a young animal ( fawn ) raises (hunter's language: leads ) is protected by the closed season. If the sexes of certain wild species cannot be clearly distinguished from the outside (such as, for example, due to clearly existing sexual dimorphism - clearly different body sizes depending on the sex, hair, feather or horn dress), the closed season always applies to both sexes. Brown hares are an example of this .

The requirement that game be spared capture and killing during the time of the birth and rearing of the offspring can be deviated from if the natural behavior of these animals causes disproportionately great damage. This applies in particular to rabbits , which can seriously damage dykes that serve to protect the coast through their burial activities. In such cases, the cancellation of the closed season is regulated by an ordinance.

fishing

In fishing , the time when the respective fish species spawn is called the closed season . The spawning season differs from species to species, so the closed seasons vary throughout the year. No spawning species may be removed from the water during this respective closed season. If caught, it must be gently returned to the water.

Besides the close season, there is the minimum landing size refer to waters, the prohibition on young fish below a certain size.
