climate

Like Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Scharmede belongs to the oceanic climatic area of northwest Germany , to which it owes low temperature differences and mild winters. However, continental influences are already at work . The temperature in summer is higher and the nights are cooler than in closer proximity to the coast. However, the surrounding low mountain ranges are also involved in reducing the amount of precipitation and the higher number of sunny days .

history

Memorial stone for the first documentary mention in 1015

In 1015 Scharmede is mentioned for the first time as Scarhem . The current spelling of the place name originated after the Thirty Years War . Most of the documents were destroyed in a fire in 1669. Therefore, the history of the community of Scharmede up to the beginning of the 19th century can only be reconstructed with great difficulty. People have probably lived here since the earliest times, as forests, meadows and running water offered good opportunities for settlement.

The area of Scharmede has belonged to the area of the later Hochstift Paderborn (prince bishopric) since the early Middle Ages .

In 1802 the Paderborn bishopric lost its state independence with the occupation by Prussia , fell back to the Kingdom of Westphalia for a few years in 1807 and returned to Prussia in 1813 after the Napoleonic defeat. Scharmede was incorporated into the province of Westphalia , which was founded in 1815, and by decree of the royal government in Minden came to the Büren district, founded in 1816 . When the districts were divided into offices , Scharmede came to the office of Boke, which was merged with the office of Salzkotten to form the office of Salzkotten-Boke in 1859.

Religions

The majority of the population in Scharmede is Catholic and belongs to the parish of Sankt Petrus und Paulus Scharmede in the parish association of Heder-Gunne-Lippe of the Büren-Delbrück dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn . Until the beginning of the 20th century Scharmede belonged to the parish of Sankt Laurentius Thüle. Only since the construction of today's parish church in 1906 next to the chapel, which was consecrated to St. Catherine at that time, the long way to the church service in Thüle is no longer necessary.

The Lutherans in the village belong to the Protestant parish of Elsen in the Paderborn parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .

Incorporation

Before 1 January 1975, the former municipality Scharmede belonged to the Office Salzkotten Boke in county Buren . When the Sauerland / Paderborn Act came into force on that day, most of the municipalities of the Salzkotten-Boke office and thus also Scharmede were merged to form the new city of Salzkotten and came with this to the Paderborn district. The legal successor to the dissolved office of Salzkotten-Boke and the municipality of Scharmede is the city of Salzkotten.

Scharmede is a district of Salzkotten and the city council elected by the citizens elects mayor for the districts .

politics

City council election

The last local election in 2009 resulted in the following distribution in the Salzkotten city council:

Mayor

The mayor is Barbara Weidlich (CDU).

coat of arms

On September 30, 1966, the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia approved the then municipality of Scharmede to use the coat of arms described below:

Blazon : “Divided by green and silver (white); at the top the decorative shape of a silver (white) standing fan (palmette) with thirteen lamellae rounded at the top, the first and last of which are rolled up in a spiral shape at the bottom; below the lower half of a broken red straightening wheel with five pointed spokes protruding above the wheel rim. "

Reason: The fan rosette can be found as a Weser renaissance motif on the half-timbered store built in 1589 in the center of the village. The straightening wheel is a torture tool and therefore an attribute of St. Catherine , patroness of the former Scharmeder chapel, which was demolished in 1907 after the construction of today's parish church.

Town twinning

On October 10, 1973, the then municipality of Scharmede entered into a partnership with Cerisy-la-Forêt in Normandy, France , making it the first municipality in the then Büren district to enter into such a partnership.
