Geographical location
Cerisy-la-Forêt is located in Normandy less than twenty kilometers inland as the crow flies from the coast to the English Channel in the canton of Saint-Clair-sur-l'Elle on the eastern border of the Manche department to the Calvados department . The place is touched by the river Esque . The community lies on the edge of the forest area called Forêt de Cerisy , which is predominantly located in the neighboring Calvados department. In the southwest of the municipality is the valley of the Elle , a tributary of the Vire.
The seat of the prefecture of the department, the city of Saint-Lô , is about twelve kilometers to the southwest.
Neighboring communities
Starting in the south in a clockwise direction, Cerisy-la-Forêt is bordered by the communes of Saint-Georges-d'Elle , Couvains and Saint-Jean-de-Savigny , all of which are also in the canton of Saint-Clair-sur-l'Elle and thus in the arrondissement Saint-Lô in the Manche department. This is followed by Sainte-Marguerite-d'Elle in the canton of Isigny-sur-Mer , Tournières , Le Molay-Littry and Montfiquet in the canton of Balleroy , all in the Bayeux arrondissement of the neighboring Calvados department .

history
In the 6th century in Cerisy-la-Forêt founded St. Vigor , bishop of Bayeux , the later Benedictines guided Abbey Cerisy-la-Forêt. This was restored in 1032 by Robert I the Magnificent , Duke of Normandy , who in the same year began building the unique abbey church that is still preserved today. The abbey is richly endowed by Robert's son, William the Conqueror , and later abolished during the French Revolution .

On October 10, 1973, Cerisy-la-Forêt entered into a partnership with the then municipality of Scharmede in what was then the Büren district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Scharmede has been a district of Salzkotten in today's Paderborn district since January 1st, 1975 .

Buildings
The most important building within the municipality is the 11th and 12th century abbey church of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Vigor , founded in the 6th century , a masterpiece of Norman Romanesque art and classified as a monument historique . This is followed by two châteaus , the Château de La Boulaye from the 18th and 20th centuries and the Château de La Couespellière from the 16th to the 19th century, each of which has a chapel dedicated to Our Lady .
