Aimé-Victor-François Guilbert (born November 15, 1812 in Cerisy-la-Forêt , Manche , † August 15, 1889 in Gap ) was a French archbishop and cardinal .

Life

Aimé Guilbert received his training in the seminary of Coutances and was ordained a priest on December 17, 1836 . First he was professor of rhetoric in the small seminary of Coutances, then in Munéville. He became director of the seminary of Mortain and in 1853 founder and director of the seminary of Valognes . In 1855 he also became a pastor there .

In 1867 he was called Bishop of Gap and received on November 10 of the same year in the Church of Saint-Malo de Valognes by François-Augustin Delamare , Archbishop of Auch , with the assistance of Jean-Pierre Bravard , Bishop of Coutances and Flavien Hugonin , Bishop of Bayeux , the episcopal ordination .

In 1877 he was appointed officer of the Legion of Honor and in 1879 he became Bishop of Amiens . On August 9, 1893 he was raised to Archbishop of Bordeaux and on May 24, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. created as a cardinal priest. However, he died on the way to Rome before he could receive a cardinal's hat and title . He was buried in the Bordeaux Cathedral.

His coat of arms is a croix de sable , wreathed with leaves and with a gold monogram of Christ in the center. His motto was: Crux Spes (“The cross is hope”).
