Gaetano de Ruggiero

Gaetano de Ruggiero (born January 12, 1816 in Naples , † October 9, 1896 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

Ruggero was born in Naples on January 12, 1816 , the same year that the Congress of Vienna annexed the Kingdom of Naples from the House of Bourbon and founded the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies . He came from a wealthy middle class family.

Gaetano de Ruggiero received his education in schools of the Barnabites and the Jesuits , later he attended the University of Naples . At the beginning of his career he was the director of the magazine Liberta cattolica . In 1847 he went to Roma, where he was trainee lawyer at the courts of the Apostolic Signature . He was later appointed Judge of the Consulta and Consultor of the Congregation for Bishops . His next post was that of the Regens of the Pontifical Chancellery , which he held from 1877 to 1889. On April 18, 1885, he also received the office of secretary of the Sacra Congregazione della Fabbrica di San Pietro , which he held until 1889. He was also canon of the chapter of the Vatican Patriarchal Basilica .

In the consistory of May 24, 1889, Pope Leo XIII appointed made him cardinal deacon and on May 27, 1889 awarded him the red biretta and the title deaconry Santa Maria in Cosmedin . Gaetano de Ruggiero was appointed executor of the papal bulls by Benedict XIV for the sanctuary of Assisi . On October 3, 1889, the Pope appointed him Prefect of the Congregation Propaganda Fide and General President of the Camera di Spoliazione . On June 25, 1894, he was entrusted with the secretariat of the Apostolic Breven and awarded the title of Grand Chancellor of the Papal Order of Knights .

Gaetano de Ruggiero died on October 9, 1896 after a long illness at the age of 80. His funeral was held in Sant'Andrea della Valle and he was buried in the chapel of the Vatican Chapter on Campo Verano .
