Mode changes for the 1972/73 season
From the coming season, the league should only be played in a single group with 8 teams. These were the six teams that finished the promotion round in places 2 to 7, the relegated from the Bundesliga ( EK Zell am See ) and the promoted from the national leagues, which was determined in a tournament of the national champions (Union Krems).
The four teams that could not qualify for the promotion round had to relegate to the respective national leagues.
