The 1999/2000 season of the Austrian ice hockey league was the first staging of a third division since the Regionalliga Ost in the 1983/84 season. In previous years, the second division had alternately been called Oberliga or Nationalliga (now the name of the second level ) at irregular intervals . A total of eleven teams took part in the newly founded championship. The EHC Fischerbräu became the champion .

Participant field and mode

The major league was largely built up with last year's participants from various regional leagues and the relegated national league, the EHC Donaustadt . Due to the relatively large number of teams, the field of participants was split into two groups. Of the five teams in Group East, three came from Vienna . The group west was made up of teams from the Tyrolean regional league. The aim of the project was to re-establish a semi-professional league as a link between the two top divisions and the regional leagues.

The two groups first played a double round trip, which resulted in 16 and 20 games respectively. Then playoffs were played in which the first of each group met the fourth of the other group, the second against the other third, etc. The three last-placed teams were eliminated. The playoffs were played with two games per encounter, with the worse placed team having home rights in the first game.
