The 2000/01 season of the Austrian ice hockey league was played with a total of seven teams. It also acted once as the second instead of the third highest division. This had become necessary due to the expansion of the Bundesliga , whose newly added teams largely consisted of former second division teams. Thus, the hosting of the actual second division, the National League, was suspended, and the Oberliga formed the second performance level this season.
Field of participants
Five of the seven participants were drawn from last year's Oberliga participants. While HC Innsbruck had switched to the Bundesliga, two new teams were added, EC Montafon and Bundesliga relegated VEU Feldkirch . The EC Salzburg had with Red Bull get a new main sponsor and now bore his name.
With the EHC Fischerbräu (defending champion), the UEC Mödling , the EHC Donaustadt , the ECU Amstetten and the UEHV Gmunden, the entire former group East was no longer there . This resulted in the following field of participants:
- VEU Feldkirch (relegated from the Bundesliga)
- EC Red Bull Salzburg
- 1. EC Wattens Penguins
- EC Kitzbühel
- SV Ehrwald
- EHC Bregenzerwald
- EC Montafon (newcomers)
