Quibou is a French municipality with 914 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region Normandy (2015 Basse-Normandie ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Saint-Lô and to the municipality association of Saint-Lô Agglo, founded in 2017 . The inhabitants are called Quibois .

The municipality of Quibou is located at the transition to the Cotentin peninsula , about twelve kilometers southwest of Saint-Lô , 65 kilometers west of Caen and about 30 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Saint-Malo . Quibou is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Le Mesnil-Amey in the north, Thèreval (point of contact) and Saint-Gilles in the northeast, Canisy in the east, Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé in the southeast, Dangy in the south, Carantilly in the west and Marigny-de- Lozon in the northwest. The Joigne , a tributary of the Vire, flows through the municipality of Quibou . The poorly forested landscape around Quibou is characterized by small-scale arable land with countless hedges typical of this part of Normandy.

Place name

The place name appears for the first time as Quiebouc in 1056. Other spellings of the place name were Quiebuc (1146), Quibuc (1252), Kiboc (1260), Kuiboc (1274) and again Quiebouc (1349).

There are two hypotheses about the origins of the name:

Word formation from Anglo-Saxon Ceap for cattle market and Holt for hill , which in Normandy soon as a synonym for hut stood
Development from the French chie le bouc , which means something like the place where the goat shits

Economy and Infrastructure

In Quibou there is a roofing company, a cider producer, an organic horticultural company and over 50 farms (fruit plantations, grain cultivation, cattle, sheep, goat and horse breeding, dairy farming). Local supplies are provided by a bakery, a grocery store, a bar / tobacco shop and a newsagent.

Quibou is located away from the nationally important traffic axes. Nine kilometers to the northeast there is a connection to the motorway-like route nationale 174 . The Lison – Lamballe railway runs through the municipality of Quibou , but without a stop. The next boarding option is at the Carantilly / Marigny train station, three kilometers to the west .
