Château Sainte-Marie castle

Agneaux [ aɲo: ] is a French commune in the Manche department in the region of Normandy . It is assigned to the canton of Saint-Lô-1 and the arrondissement of Saint-Lô .

geography

The street and housing estate with 4027 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located in a loop of the river Vire, which extends to the east, immediately west of the city of Saint-Lô . It is crossed by the D900 département road that goes from Saint-Lô to Coutances .

history

During the construction of the Saint-Lô bypass, emergency excavations were carried out after the first archaeological finds . It clearly showed that the area was already populated in prehistoric times . Most of the traces found date from the Bronze Age, including a large necropolis . But everyday objects from the Middle Ages were also brought to light.

Toponyms

The medieval place name is derived from the old French word Agnel (French agneau , German "lamb"). It is believed that there was once a sheep farm on site.

  • The 13th century Château de Sainte-Marie now functions as a hotel-restaurant and has been a French cultural monument since 1974 .
  • The farm of the castle ( Ferme du Château ) from the 17th century has been a Monument historique | French cultural monument since 1946.
  • The 19th century Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste church . The tower was destroyed in World War II in 1944 and later rebuilt.
