Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé is a French municipality with 529 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Lô-2 .
geography
Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé is located on the Cotentin peninsula , 9 kilometers southwest of Saint-Lô , between the neighboring municipalities
- Canisy with Saint-Ébremond-de-Bonfossé in the west, north and northeast and Bourgvallées with Saint-Samson-de-Bonfossé in the southeast. The Joigne flows northwest of the town center through the municipality.
history
1793 received Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé as Saint Martin de Bonfossé in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and in 1801 as Saint-Martin-de-Bonfosse the right to local self-government. In 1832 the town of Saint-Sauveur-de-Bonfossé was incorporated.
Attractions
The manor Manoir de Bonfossé was built in the last quarter of the 16th century. It belonged to the Gourfaleur family. Jean de Gourfaleur was mentioned in a document in 1555 and was captain in Saint-Lô from 1574 to 1584. The chapel , wall elevation and trompe-l'œil wall paintings were entered in 2003 in the additional directory of the Monuments historiques (historical monuments). The mansion is privately owned.
The parish church of Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé dates from the 13th century. However, only the choir and bell tower have survived from that time . The porch of the portal dates from the 16th century, the nave was rebuilt in the 19th century. The wall paintings inside the church were entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1994. The altar , gradin , tabernacle , retable and two statues depicting Martin of Tours and Nicholas of Myra were made in 1747 and classified as a Monument historique in 1975.
