Marie Corelli

Marie Corelli (* as Mary Mackay , May 1, 1855 in London ; † April 21, 1924 in Stratford-upon-Avon ; also known as Minnie Mackay ) was a British occultist and writer .

Life

Mary Mackay was the illegitimate daughter of the Scottish poet and composer Charles Mackay and his servant, Elizabeth Mills. In 1866 the young girl was educated at a Paris convent and was only allowed to return to her homeland for the first time after four years.

She lived with her companion Bertha Vyer for over 40 years. Mary and Bertha were buried side by side.

Her life served as the inspiration for the movie Angel - A life like in a dream (Original title: Angel ) by François Ozon from 2007. The screenplay was written by Martin Crimp and Ozon himself based on the novel of the same name by British writer Elizabeth Taylor (1957), the in turn based on the biography of Marie Corelli.
