Johana "Jane" B. Novak (born January 12, 1896 in St. Louis , Missouri , † February 3, 1990 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American actress of the silent film era .

Life

Jane Novak was one of five children of the Bohemian immigrant Joseph Novak and his wife Barbara. Novak's sister Eva Novak , who was two years younger than him, later also became known as an actress. She attended a convent school of the poor school sisters of Notre Dame , from where she fled with a friend. From then on, both of them struggled together as actors in vaudeville pieces. However, Novak later returned to her parents' home.

Through contacts with her aunt Anne Schaefer, who was active as an actress, Jane Novak began a career in Hollywood in 1913 . In the following years she was the leading actress in a large number of silent film productions. Among other things, Novak played the role of Beatrice Audley in His Second Wife in 1924 , the screenplay of which was written by Alfred Hitchcock . The same goes for The Princess and the Violinist from 1925, in which she again played the lead role. Unlike many of her fellow actors, Novak made the transition from sound to silent film. Her later film appearances included supporting roles in films such as Desert Fury . Novak remained active until 1954 and then retired into private life.

Jane Novak was married to Frank Newburg from 1915 until the divorce in 1918, with whom they had a child. In 1974, the former actress published a cookbook called Treasury of Chicken Cooking . In 1988 she was interviewed in a documentary about Harold Lloyd produced for ITV for the last time in front of the camera. Novak lived in Woodland Hills, a neighborhood in Los Angeles . She died there on February 3, 1990 at the age of 94. Her grave is in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery at the side of her sister Eva, who died in 1988.
