The municipality belongs to the canton of Pont-Hébert (until 2015: canton of Saint-Clair-sur-l'Elle ) in the arrondissement of Saint-Lô . The inhabitants are called Couvinots .

Couvains is about seven kilometers northeast of Saint-Lô . Couvains is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Jean-de-Savigny in the north, Cerisy-la-Forêt in the northeast, Saint-Georges-d'Elle in the east, Saint-André-de-l'Épine in the south and southeast, and La Luzerne in the south-west, Villiers-Fossard in the west and Saint-Clair-sur-l'Elle in the north-west.
