Location of Verlar in Salzkotten

Verlar is the smallest town in the town of Salzkotten with an area of 3,676 km² . For many years, agriculture formed the economic basis of the 755 inhabitants on the banks of the Lippe River . Verlar also forms the western edge of the Paderborn district and the Bürener Land region and belongs to the Paderborn monastery (region) .

geography

Geographical location

Verlar belongs to the duckbill of the old district of Büren and is located in the lip lowlands , according to the current classification in the manual of the natural spatial structure of Germany in the subunit 540.20 Obere Lippetalung , which belongs to the subunit 540.2 Ostmünsterländer Sande , the main unit 540 Ostmünsterland and the main unit group 54 Westphalian Bay .

Waters

The Lippe forms the western part of the northern border of the locality.

Neighboring places

Beginning in the north, Verlar borders in a clockwise direction on the Salzkotten districts of Mantinghausen , Schwelle and Verne , the core town of Geseke and the districts of Garfeln and Rebbeke in Lippstadt . While the city of Salzkotten is in the Paderborn district , the cities of Geseke and Lippstadt belong to the Soest district .

geology

In the area of the lip lowlands , limestone and marlstone formed as sediment in seas in the Cretaceous period . During the Ice Age , ground moraines were formed under glaciers and inland ice , which appear here as boulder clay and gravel above the rocks mentioned .

Above that, sand and gravel were brought in from the Senne through the Lippe and deposited. In the area of rivers and streams there were also alluvial deposits and the moors were also formed in the Holocene . The wind formed the sand into dunes , which are now largely dismantled. From the sands was Podsol in which a Ortsteinschicht hampered root growth. In the area of the Lippe floodplain, floodplain loam was created by the sedimentation of suspended matter.

climate

Like Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Verlar belongs to the oceanic climatic area of northwest Germany , to which it owes low temperature differences and mild winters. However, continental influences are already at work . The temperature in summer is higher and the nights are cooler than in closer proximity to the coast. However, the surrounding low mountain ranges are also involved in reducing the amount of precipitation and the higher number of sunny days .

history

Catholic Church Franziskus-Xaverius

Verlar was first mentioned in a document in 1389. In it, among other events, "corde planckenbere borghere tho gesike" was enfeoffed with "demo gude tho verlar". Residents were mentioned in 1575 on the occasion of a hereditary homage to those who were obliged to the new house of the Lords of Hörde zu Boke on the dirt castle . In the certificate prepared about it, 4 worshipers from Verlar are named. Even in later times, only heirs of the lords of Hörde zu Boke can be identified as landlords in Verlar with the barons of Fürstenberg and the lords of Alten zu Thüle . When in 1578 officials from Rietberg tried to take control of the Lords of Hörde zu Boke after they died out, there was talk of the "Kalhof zu Verlar at the Landwehr von Geseke".

In 1672, in an enumeration of the courtyards of the Boke Office in the Prince Diocese of Paderborn, 20 new farmers were settled in addition to the old farmers Westermeyer, Holtgreve, Beinen, Böckell, Berensmeyer, Glahe and Große Schulte. In addition, the hirelings - workers who were paid by the farmers - had worked their way up so far that they could gradually acquire the hirelings' houses of the colonies and the associated land. In 1868 there were only three vacant heuerling houses left. The farmers whose lands were in the Geseker Flur already achieved a certain level of prosperity. The Royal Westphalian Railway Company with its rail connection in Geseke also played its part.

During the great economic crisis of the 1920s, some men from Verlar went to the Netherlands as wage workers. There they learned the skill of wooden shoemaking . This craft flourished in Verlar with 34 clog makers at times. Today this craft sector has largely died out.

Incorporation

On January 1, 1975, the municipality of Verlar was incorporated into Salzkotten due to the Sauerland / Paderborn law of November 5, 1974 .

The Salzkotten-Boke office was dissolved during the local reorganization , as the cities and municipalities are now directly subordinate to the districts. Verlar is a district Salzkottens and elected by the citizens City Council selects for the districts of mayor . The legal successor to the office of Salzkotten-Boke and the municipality of Verlar is the city of Salzkotten.
