The Detmold tram is a former tram operator in North Rhine-Westphalia . Between 1882 and 1897, the starch manufacturer Hoffmann from Bad Salzuflen , the engineer Ferdinand Wessel with the city master builder Schubert, the North German Railway Construction and Operating Company and a company from Dresden applied for the concession to build a tram in and around Detmold . Wessel and Schubert were awarded the contract on May 15, 1897. In 1898 the limited partnership Lippische Elektrizitätswerke was founded. Due to financial difficulties, it was converted into an AG, or LEAG for short, on February 9, 1900 . A large part of the share capital of 600,000 marks was raised by AG Elektrizitätswerke, formerly Kummer & Co. , from Dresden.

After the construction was preceded by slow, the route with police on February 28, 1900 decreased and inaugurated despite numerous minor flaws on 1 March 1900's. The tram drove from the post office in Detmold to the city center and on to the “Centrale” on the southern outskirts. There the route forked into two lines to Hiddesen and Berlebeck . On April 8, the route from the post office to the train station was extended. In 1900 and 1903 there were two extensions in Berlebeck. The last extension took place on May 16, 1912 in Hiddesen.

During the First World War , PESAG bought up all of the shares in LEAG. The official takeover took place on July 1, 1922. Line 2 between the Hornschen Tor in Detmold and Horn via Remmighausen was opened as early as July 22, 1920 . The route followed the current Bundesstraße 239 to Schmedissen and then the Nordstraße to Horn. After the LEAG network had been converted to the PESAG operating voltage of 800 volts, line 8 via Bielefelder Strasse to Heidenoldendorf was put into operation on October 16, 1926 . The continuation via Birkendamm to Pivitsheide VL took place on June 18, 1928. The following tram lines operated in Detmold:

Line 2 Detmold, train station - Horn - Bad Lippspringe - Paderborn 36.7 km Travel time 109 minutes
Line 3 Detmold, train station - Hiddesen 5 km Travel time 17 minutes
Line 4 Detmold, Bahnhof - Berlebeck (- Hotel Johannaberg until 1942) 6.6 (8) km Travel time 25 (30) minutes
Line 5 (2d) Detmold, train station - Horn - Bad Meinberg , spa gardens 14.2 km Travel time 55 minutes
Line 8 Detmold, train station - Heidenoldendorf - Pivitsheide VL 6.8 km Travel time 21 minutes

The lines in the city area ran every 30 minutes. Other planned new routes, for example to Lemgo , were no longer implemented. The tram lines were converted to bus operation in 1954 :

May 24, 1954 Line 2 Detmold - Horn, market
August 8, 1954 Line 8 Detmold, train station - Pivitsheide
August 15, 1954 Line 3 Detmold, train station - Hiddesen
August 15, 1954 Line 4 Detmold, train station - Berlebeck

Part of the route to Pivitsheide is used today as a cycling and hiking trail.

In Detmold and the surrounding area, local public transport was operated for many years by the post office and the railway , later solely by the railway and, from the 1990s, by Busverkehr Ostwestfalen GmbH (BVO). Stadtverkehr Detmold GmbH has existed since 1993 and is now responsible for urban local transport.
