Pivitsheide V. L. is a district of Detmold in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Lippe in Germany .

Surname

The abbreviation “V. L. ”stands for“ Vogtei Lage ”, to which the village used to belong. The origin of the name is uncertain. It could either come from the Low German term “Püiwitk” (lapwing) or from “Piuits” (poor people). In addition to Pivitsheide V. L. there is also Pivitsheide V. H. The abbreviation “V. H. "stands for" Vogtei Heiden ". Both formerly independent places were incorporated into the city of Detmold on January 1st, 1970.

geography

Pivitsheide V. L. is located about eight kilometers west of the Detmold city center. The place is traversed by the Rethlager Bach , whose origins are the Rethlager springs . In large sections of its course, it has been left close to nature and in the center of the village forms the remarkable Rethlager Mühlenteich. The terminus of tram line 8 of the Detmold tram , which ran from Detmold train station via Heidenoldendorf to Pivitsheide V. L. and was 6.8 kilometers long, was also nearby . Operations began in 1928 and ended in 1954 to make way for private transport.

The Dörenschlucht gorge , through which a pass road leads over the Teutoburg Forest , lies on the southern border of the village . Here is a small, abandoned military cemetery, which bears witness to a battle in the last days of the Second World War . A unit of the Waffen SS had holed up here to stop the advance of the American troops. After seven American Sherman tanks were shot down, they had to retreat to the nearby quarry, where 35 German soldiers and an unknown number of Americans lost their lives.

history

Pivitsheide V. L. is first mentioned in writing in 1590 as vffm Pifit .

In March 2009, the traditional Eichenkrug restaurant , built in 1847, including the outbuildings and a historic half-timbered house, was demolished. The row of houses that characterizes the townscape had previously been empty for years; the Eichenkrug shopping center was built on the vacated site in 2010 .
