Location of Berlebeck in the urban area

Berlebeck is a district of Detmold and is located about five kilometers south of the city center. The neighboring districts of Detmold are Heiligenkirchen and Hornoldendorf . Berlebeck lies between wooded hills on the northern edge of the Teutoburg Forest , the Wallberg (256 m) in the east and the Hahnberg (260 m) in the west, which is dominated by the Hohe Warte (325 m). Johannaberg is in the south of the district.

history

Berlebeck is mentioned for the first time as Bertelwyk and Beke in an estimate register. A document dates from 1471 in which both names appear together as Bertelbeke and about 20 years later the name Berlebeck appears. There is evidence that the first farms already existed around 1000 AD in the marshy valley of the Berlebecke and from 1550 the first street kötter settlements were built in the Hahn- and Stembergs area. The Krugmeier farm, an important farm for horses and village inns, which was later bought up by the Princely Forestry Directorate, was probably built before that. A baking house from 1862 can still be found next to the restored building. At the entrance to Berlebeck is the Wächterhof, built in 1488, which is still family-owned today. The farm residents used to have the task of monitoring access to the village. A paper mill was built in 1607 on the site of a grinding mill , which was officially designated as sliphutte in 1548 . Today the guest's house stands here . In the 17th and 18th centuries, Berlebeck also had an iron smelter, an iron hammer , a gun foundry and a powder mill . The large Hotel Sommerfrische Johannaberg not far from today's Gasthaus Hirschsprung was also famous . It was demolished in 1950. The composer Max Bruch stayed there in July 1889 .

The climatic health resort offers a number of sights to the numerous visitors. On a hill, the Kelle, lies the eagle observatory , the largest bird of prey observatory in Germany with 180 birds at the moment. It is open every day from February 16 to November 15 and offers free-flight demonstrations with eagles, vultures and falcons. A little further west lies the Hangstein inn on a mountain saddle . To the left of Paderborner Straße, at a wooded height (372 m), you will find the ruins of the Falkenburg , built around 1200 , probably the oldest castle in Lippe, which was significant for the development of the area northeast of the Teutoburg Forest. On the occasion of the Everstein feud at the beginning of the 15th century, Duke Heinrich I of Braunschweig was imprisoned in the castle for a long time. The Berlebecker Quellen and the Berlebecke, located south of the town in the mountains, are the main suppliers of Detmold's drinking water. The waterworks was built in 1899 and has a remarkable sandstone portal in which the donation by the Princely House is shown.

On January 1, 1970 Berlebeck was incorporated into the district town of Detmold.

The 12.6 km² district of Berlebeck has 2,446 inhabitants (as of August 2006).
