Location of Niewald in the urban area

Niewald ( Low German : Nüiwauld ) is a district of Detmold in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia and is located about six kilometers northwest of the city center. The neighboring districts of Detmold are in a clockwise direction Oettern-Bremke , Jerxen-Orbke and Nienhagen . Niewald was probably founded as a Hagenhufendorf in the 13th century, just like the neighboring Nienhagen . The origin of the name is controversial. The version Niggenwald means New Forest , Nienwald could be called Lower Forest and finally Niggewalt is the proper name of a farmer who settled in 1532.

In order to keep the peasant sons who were not entitled to inheritance in the country, the sovereign Simon I of Lippe had distributed special, more extensive rights. He guaranteed them a hoof of land if they stayed at home and did not emigrate to the Baltic States. The land given over was near the Oetternbach ; so the water supply was secured.

On January 1st, 1970 Niewald was incorporated into the district town of Detmold.

A total of 70 citizens live in Niewald on an area of 1.4 km² (August 2006). The local mayor is currently Achim Mausbach ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ), the representative in the city council is Wolfgang Köster ( SPD ).
