The district Detmold-Süd was created in 1970 as part of the regional reform, when the core town of Detmold was divided into Detmold-North and Detmold-South. The neighboring districts of Detmold are, in a clockwise direction, Detmold-Nord , Spork-Eichholz , Hornoldendorf , Heiligenkirchen , Hiddesen and Heidenoldendorf . In the area of the Detmold-Süd district you will find the Westphalian Open Air Museum , the University of Music and the Palaisgarten .

The Westphalian Open-Air Museum has been continuously expanded on the site of the former princely zoo since 1966 and is the largest of its kind in Germany with more than 100 historical buildings on 90 hectares. Almost all Westphalian landscapes are represented, from the poor Kötterhaus to the affluent Schultenhof . The buildings have been built true to the original by experts from old buildings and are surrounded by typical gardens and fields. The interior is also historical and true to detail.
