The Rethlager sources are the origin of the Rethlager Bach on the northern slope of the Teutoburg Forest and at the same time a natural monument . The karst springs are located in the area of ​​the city of Detmold on the border to the city of Lage in the up to 20 m deep Dörenschlucht , a relatively flat transition over the Teutoburg Forest. On the eastern slope of the 217 m high Kleiner Ehberg, the springs are at an altitude of 160  m above sea level. NHN between the Detmold district of Pivitsheide VL and the Lagens district of Hörste .

The Rethlager springs have a high, but fluctuating discharge . The water is clear and very cold even in summer. In addition to many small openings at the bottom, there are three main openings (rock crevices) from which most of the water comes to the surface.

The Rethlager springs and the upper reaches of the Rethlager Bach are part of the 26.07 hectare nature reserve “Dörenschlucht” (identifier: LIP-023). Furthermore, the Rethlager Bach runs through the 11.6 hectare nature reserve "NSG Abgrabung Retlager Bach" (identification: LIP-089). The Rethlager Bach is classified in the water quality class II, which means that it is moderately polluted. In large sections of its course it is left close to nature. The brook runs here in a notch valley and forms a natural and undeveloped spring and brook system with natural water dynamics.

Settlement history

At the springs in Rethlager there are traces of human settlement that date back to the Mesolithic and represent one of the oldest settlements in Lippe. These are hut floor plans that were discovered and excavated by Heinrich Schwanold at the beginning of the 20th century . Two of the huts were reconstructed in the Oerlinghausen Archaeological Open-Air Museum .

The Rethlager springs are one of the attractions in the Teutoburg Forest that can be reached on the Hermannsweg . There are many other marked and easily accessible hiking trails around the springs . There is a campsite just a few hundred meters from the Rethlager springs .
