Wilhelm Heinrich August Schwanold (born April 16, 1867 in Salzuflen , † July 29, 1932 in Detmold ) was a German teacher and local researcher in the Lippe area .

Life

Heinrich Schwanold was born in Salzuflen in 1867. He attended the Salzufler Citizens' School, and later the Rector's School. From 1883 to 1886 he trained at the teachers' college in Detmold. With his final exams, the Princely Government gave him permission to call himself Heinrich Schwanold from now on. He then found his first job as a teacher in Heidenoldendorf . From 1890 to 1896 he was then a teacher at the Rector's School (later the secondary school) in his hometown of Bad Salzuflen. He then worked from 1896 to 1915 as a trainer at the teachers' college in Detmold. On April 1, 1915, he was appointed school councilor for the Detmold district. Besides Schwanold was for several years a member of the Lippe Synod , then entered but later on grounds of conscience again. Schwanold died on July 29, 1932 in Detmold.

Local history explorer

In addition to his work as a teacher and later as a school councilor, Schwanold was a passionate local researcher. From a young age he was already deeply involved in the history and nature of the Lippe region . At the same time he became a very active member of the natural science association for the state of Lippe .

In the course of time, Schwanold became increasingly concerned with the prehistoric ground monuments of the Lippe region. Among other things, he researched and mapped countless barrows between the Egge Mountains and the Upper Weser . During further research he discovered several Mesolithic settlements in the area of ​​the Senne and the Teutoburg Forest . Outstanding here was his archaeological excavation of a residential area at the Rethlager springs, through which a number of new findings from the Mesolithic period were gained. Countless of his finds are now in the archaeological collection of the Lippisches Landesmuseum in Detmold. Heinrich Schwanold succeeded with his numerous publications and lectures to interest a broad section of the population in local research.

Honors

In honor of Schwanold, the new Wüsten school was named "Schwanold School" for its inauguration on November 15, 1949.

In the former Rödlinghausen district of Detmold (today Detmold-Nord ), Schwanoldstraße is named after the local researcher.
