Buildings
In the Middle Ages, resulting Wittenburg was on the southern tip of Finie , a ridge northwest of Elze , between Osterwald ( Barenburg ) and Marienburg . Strategically it was favorable; so the north-south road connection as well as the west-east Hellweg could be controlled. In the 14th century the castle was transformed into a monastery for the Augustinian Canons within the Hildesheim congregation. After the Reformation in the middle of the 16th century, the monastery fell into disrepair and became the seat of the Wittenberg Office. Later it became a domain , and under King George III. from Hanover to the sample property. Since 1795 it was the meeting place of the Calenberg Agricultural Society . Basically only the former monastery church has been preserved. Today the front half of it is used as a church and the back half is used for exhibitions and events during the Wittenburg summer .
