Alois Schertzinger (* 13. July 1787 in Gütenbach ; † February 12 jul. / 24. February  1864 greg. In Sarata , native Aloysius Schertzinger ) was a watchmaker , music director and co-founder of the German settlement in Sarata Bessarabia.

Life

Alois Schertzinger was born on July 13, 1787 in Gütenbach near Furtwangen in the Black Forest . Schertzinger learned the watchmaking trade and emigrated to Saint Petersburg at the age of 17 . There he received an award for his watchmaking art and was found to be a "capable master".

He was a good violin player and took part in a few concerts. Due to his musicality, he was temporarily Kapellmeister at the court of Tsar Alexander I of Russia .

In St. Petersburg he met the preacher Ignaz Lindl . With him he became a close friend. When Lindl set out to found a settlement with German emigrants in the southern Russian governorate of Bessarabia , Schertzinger followed him. Alois Schertzinger drafted the plan for the settlement of the colonist village Sarata (today in Ukraine ), which was built in 1822. As he spoke the Russian language and because of his organizational talent in procuring building materials, he was an important pillar of the German settlers. On August 15, Jul. / August 27, 1822 greg. Schertzinger married Marianna Schäfer (1805–1888) from Bad Langenbrücken / Baden , with whom he had 3 children.

Schertzinger was an assistant to Gottlieb Veygel, the mayor of Saratas, and repeatedly authorized representative of the community at the Akkerman district court for 19 years . Despite being recognized for his services in founding Sarata, in later years he sadly withdrew into private life after being relegated to the community.

Death record

The Russian Tsar honored him for his many years of service by awarding him the silver medal with which only a few Bessarabian Germans were awarded. Alois Schertzinger died of a stroke on February 12, 1864 in Sarata and was buried there on February 14, 1864.
