history

Name giver Damian Hugo von Schönborn

Bad Schönborn was created on January 1, 1971 as part of the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg from the two former municipalities of Bad Langenbrücken and Bad Mingolsheim. The new community was initially called Bad Mingolsheim-Langenbrücken and was renamed Bad Schönborn on August 7, 1972. The name Bad Schönborn goes back to Damian Hugo von Schönborn ( Prince-Bishop of Speyer 1719–1743), who comprehensively redesigned Kislau Castle in Bad Mingolsheim. Until the district reform on January 1, 1973 Bad Schönborn was part of the Bruchsal district .

Bad Mingolsheim

Mingolsheim was first mentioned in 773 in the Lorsch Codex . In 1353 it came under the rule of the Bishop of Speyer ( Gerhard von Ehrenberg ). In 1622, during the Thirty Years' War, the Battle of the Ohrberg between Count Mansfeld and Tilly took place here.

As early as 1825, when searching for drinking water, drilling the first hole at a depth of 30 meters led to a sulfur spring. From 1835 to 1846 the first sanatorium was put into operation, but it could not last. In 1905 a private start was made again by Otto Sebastian Weickgenannt after drilling a second well on his property. He put this into operation under Schwefelbad Mingolsheim and finally founded the company Schwefelbad Mingolsheim GmbH on March 3, 1920 . Today the institution continues as the St. Rochus Clinic. Since June 30, 1964, the place has had the addition of Bad . In May 1970, a new deep drilling found a thermal brine with a 645 meters in depth bed of four liters / sec and a temperature of 45 ° C artesian exits. This strong sodium chloride thermal bath was used as a Lambertus spring and in 1975, with the newly built thermal brine exercise bath, was given its purpose as a Thermarium .

Bad Langenbrücken

Coat of arms Bad Langenbruecken.svg

Langenbrücken was first mentioned in 1269 when the Bishop of Speyer ( Heinrich II. ) Acquired the manor there.

Prince-Bishop Franz Christoph von Hutten had a sulfur bath built after the discovery of sulfur springs in 1766, which became the basis for the spa business. Langenbrücken belonged to the Principality of Speyer until 1802. On September 15, 1802, the area on the right bank of the Rhine, including Langenbrücken, was taken over by the Margrave of Baden . On September 6, 1965, the state government of Baden-Württemberg gave the place the name Bad . The name is derived from a long bridge that is said to have served as a customs post as early as Roman times.

Religions

Mingolsheim and Langenbrücken were shaped by the Catholic Monastery of Speyer for centuries . The pastoral care unit Bad Schönborn-Kronau is now part of the Archdiocese of Freiburg . In addition, there is also an Evangelical regional church and a Free Evangelical Church (FeG) . The New Apostolic Church is also represented with a congregation in the Langenbrücken district.

Jewish cemetery in Bad Mingolsheim

From the 18th century to 1935 there was also a Jewish community in Mingolsheim . In 1714 four Jewish families were counted, in 1875 the highest number was reached with 77 people. From 1827 the Jewish community belonged to the Bruchsal rabbinical district . There was a synagogue in Mingolsheim until the 1930s. The Stolpersteine Bad Schönborn initiative , founded in 2015, is actively committed to preserving the memory of the Jewish fellow citizens of Bad Schönborn.

The Jewish cemetery with 154 grave sites is enclosed by a stone wall and is located on the northeastern outskirts of Bad Mingolsheim. The area is 24 ares, of which the graves and the path only take up about 10.5 ares, the rest is meadow. The cemetery was completed in 1878 and used until 1939. In addition to the Mingolsheim Jews, the Jews from Malsch and Östringen also lie on it . Before this time, the dead were buried in Obergrombach .

coat of arms

Bad Schönborn

Blazon : "In blue, a two-shell silver fountain offset to the left with a silver water fountain, on the top right bordered by a golden shield, inside a blue crowned red lion head."

Explanation: After the formation of the community through the merger of Bad Langenbrücken and Bad Mingolsheim, the coat of arms of the community was awarded by the Ministry of the Interior of Baden-Württemberg in 1975. The prince-bishop's Schönborn coat of arms is here reduced to a lion's body. Like the fountain, the name Schönborn alludes to the spa town's medicinal springs, which have been in use since the 18th century. The colors blue and silver are those of the Speyer Monastery, to which both places belonged until 1803.

Town twinning

Bad Schönborn has had partnerships with Niederbronn-les-Bains ( Alsace , France ) and Kiskunmajsa ( Hungary ) since 2001 .

Health and tourism

Bad Schönborn is one of the well-known health resorts in Baden-Württemberg due to its sulfur and thermal water. It has numerous spa and rehabilitation facilities. The development of the St. Lambertus thermal fountain, which the former mayor Willhauck promoted, was a major factor in the upswing of the health resort. Under his successor Bender, the Thermarium was inaugurated in the current spa area in Mingolsheim in 1975. The most important local clinics and rehabilitation centers are the St. Rochus Clinic in Bad Mingolsheim, the Sigmund-Weil and Gotthard Schettler Clinic, and the Sigel Clinic and the Mikina Specialist Clinic in Bad Langenbrücken.

Companies

In 1956 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of the Mingolsheim plant of the Fuchs-Bagger company from Ditzingen near Stuttgart . This started an economic upswing. Up to 1000 people found work here in the late post-war years. In 1985, the Langenburg company Karl Schaeff GmbH & Co. took over the Johannes Fuchs KG machine factory in Ditzingen and thus also the local branch. After the new company takeover in 2002 by the American TEREX group from Westport (Connecticut) , the company operates under the name of Terex / Fuchs . The handling and loading machines with the sky blue paint can be found all over the world.

Another company is Ophelis GmbH .

The Schäfer Group develops, designs and manufactures tools, machines and special machines as manual, semi- and fully automated systems for the wire processing industry.

After the Second World War, the Vogtländische Gardinenweberei Renz & Sohn GmbH , which had fled from the Russian-occupied part of Germany, settled in the district of Langenbrücken . Many former workers came with the company and settled in Langenbrücken. The curtains were known nationwide, including the actress Maria Schell came in the 1950s to choose curtains.

traffic

Both districts are connected to the Baden-Kurpfalz-Bahn (Heidelberg – Karlsruhe). The Heidelberg – Bruchsal – Karlsruhe railway line was opened to traffic on April 10, 1843. At the same time, a train station was set up in Langenbrücken (today Bad Schönborn Süd ). The train station in Mingolsheim was not built until 1875 (today Bad Schönborn-Kronau ). In addition to long-distance trains, the S 3 and S 4 lines of the Rhein-Neckar S-Bahn also run on the route today . The community with its two train stations belongs to the tariff area of the Karlsruhe Transport Association (KVV). Since the tariff border to the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar (VRN) runs north of the municipality, it is also part of the transition area of this network.

The place is connected to the national road network by the federal highway 3 (Buxtehude – Weil am Rhein). In the village, the federal road 292 (to Lauda-Königshofen) branches off from the B 3. The federal autobahn 5 (north-south) and the federal autobahn 6 (west-east) run nearby . The place suffers from considerable noise pollution from road and rail traffic, so a night driving ban for trucks is under discussion in several places. A bypass is also being planned.

education

In addition to the Bad Schönborn Realschule and the Michael-Ende-Community School, there is also a primary school in each of the two districts and the Franz-Josef-Mone-Förderschule. For the youngest there are two communal, four Roman Catholic and one Protestant kindergarten.
