Hans von Mingolsheim

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans von Mingolsheim (* probably around 1410 in Mingolsheim (?); † around 1473 in Heilbronn ) was a builder and stonemason .

Life

From 1464 at the latest, Hans had the construction management at the Carmelite monastery in Heilbronn
Kilian's Church in Heilbronn, Hans created the nave with side aisles between the towers

A date of birth has not been passed down from him, it should be around 1410. The "von Mingolsheim" is not to be understood as a title of nobility , but rather describes the origin of his person or family. Probably from 1425 he began an apprenticeship as a stonemason, possibly while building Kislau Castle near Mingolsheim. He is then mentioned many times in the sources of the city of Heilbronn. The document book of the city of Heilbronn lists it in several places and indicates that the Steinmetz families, who later still lived in the city, go back to Hans von Mingolsheim. From the entries it can be concluded that a Hans (his father?) May have been in Heilbronn as early as 1399. In 1451 he worked in Wimpfen , where he worked on the tabernacle of today's evangelical town church Bad Wimpfen . From 1454 to 1455 he was busy restoring the palace building (a castle-like palace complex) next to the Speyer Cathedral for 200 guilders wages. In 1457 he was also a councilor in Speyer . Then he was back in Heilbronn, where he lived in 1458 in Klostergasse. In 1460 he is a citizen and councilor in Heilbronn.

His most important activities in Heilbronn include helping to build the Kilian's Church and the Carmelite Monastery . Between 1447 and 1454 he was involved in the construction of the late Gothic aisles and again between 1458 and 1460 in the renovation of the nave of the Kilian's Church. For the Carmelite monastery, the construction of which Pope Nicholas V allowed on January 28, 1447 with the bull Inter clara salutis opera , he possibly carried out plans as early as 1448. From 1464 until his death he was in charge of the Carmelite monastery building.

progeny

With his first wife, whose name and marriage are unknown to us, he had six children, only four of whom are known by name. Based on the father's profession, they all had the family name Steinmetz :

  • Magdalena (* ~ before 1428)
  • Lorenz (* ~ before 1430), mentioned in a document in 1450 as master and supervisor of the Carmelite monastery building.
  • Niklaus (von Mingolsheim) (* ~ before 1439), who was accepted into the Steinmetzenbund in 1459 and attended the Speyer Masters' Meeting of 1464 together with (father) Hans .
  • Heinrich (* ~ after 1440) was city architect in Heilbronn from 1477 to 1481 .

These three sons probably all apprenticed to their father, since traditionally the knowledge of the stonemasons about construction and construction was passed on from father to son.

From his second marriage to "Els Mettelbach (-in)", who died in 1470, three stonemason children are known:

  • Barbara (* ~ before 1465)
  • Apollonia (* ~ before 1467)
  • Balthasar (* ~ before 1469) official as mayor, city councilor and judge in Heilbronn.

In the same year 1470 he married for the third time. However, before "his hussfrowen hyraut" was certified and sealed with "Margret Berlin", he died around 1473. The youngest child "Hänslein" (* ~ around 1472) arose from this short marriage.

After the death of the respected city architect Hans von Mingolsheim, a twenty-one year inheritance dispute arose over his considerable fortune. This dispute could only be ended in 1494.

  13. Since Lorenz is already referred to as a master in 1450, he should have received the master's title at the age of around 20 as a result of his apprenticeship and journeyman. This leads to the conclusion that he must have been born around 1430. The date of birth of his father Hans would therefore also have to be calculated before approx. 1410.
