Helmut Schmolz (born December 15, 1928 in Geislingen an der Steige ; † January 8, 2006 ) was the city archivist and local researcher in Heilbronn .

Life

Schmolz was the son of Geislinger chaser master Hugo Paul Schmolz and his wife Babette. After graduating from high school in 1948, he began studying German and history , among other things, in Tübingen , which he completed with a doctorate. phil. completed. He then passed the state examination for the higher archive service at the State Archives in Ludwigsburg .

From 1954 Schmolz was head of the city archive in Geislingen, from 1956 of the district archive in Göppingen. In 1960 he became City Archives Councilor in Geislingen, and in 1963 Heilbronn city archivist. The Stadtarchiv Heilbronn was at that time still in the Heilbronner meat house , then moved to an intermediate station from 1966 in the Klarastraße in 1976 in the Deutschhof . The archive rooms in the Deutschhof are essentially based on his plans. Under the direction of Schmolz, the city's collection of contemporary history and the photo site were established and all other collections, including the scientific library, were extensively expanded.

Schmolz was one of the first archivists to undertake extensive exhibition activities and is therefore considered one of the pioneers of modern archiving in Baden-Württemberg. From 1966 he was the City Archives Councilor and from 1971 until his retirement in 1991 City Archives Director.

He was a member of the federal-state-municipal commission for professional and tariff issues of archivists, librarians and documentaries as well as an extraordinary member of the commission for historical regional studies of Baden-Württemberg. In 1971 he organized the Southwest German Archive Day and in 1981 the German Archive Day in Heilbronn. From 1971 until his death in 2006, Schmolz was also chairman of the Heilbronn Historical Society .

Schmolz was the author and editor of numerous works, particularly on the history of Heilbronn , often in collaboration with his long-time colleague Hubert Weckbach . His last works include contributions for the annual reports of the Kreissparkasse Heilbronn , which had regional examples of the architectural styles to be seen on the euro notes.
