German Archives Day

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Archive Day is the most important meeting of the German archive system . It takes place annually. The German Archives Day is organized by the Association of German Archivists eV (VdA), a professional association founded in 1946 . Archive day should not be confused with archive day . The next German Archives Day is expected to take place in 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the 2020 Archive Day in Bielefeld has been canceled.

Procedure and documentation

An integral part of the German Archive Days is an opening lecture, the meetings of the specialist groups of the VdA, joint working sessions, section meetings and subject-related study trips, but also guided tours through archives at the conference location. The Archivistica , Europe's largest trade fair for archive technology such as archive software, shelving systems, scanners and materials for preservation , also takes place as part of the German Archives Day . The conference negotiations have been published since 1995 as a supplement by the archivist , the newsletter of the German archiving system.

Frequency, duration and venue

Before 1945 there were 27 archive days, almost every year with the exception of the times of the First and Second World Wars. After 1949 there have been 61 archive days so far. As the organizer, the VdA always works closely with the archives or archives of the inviting city as well as with the respective state archives. In contrast to the annual rhythm, there were no archive days in 1980, 1984, 1988 and 2004, among others. The duration of the archive day was initially one to two days, since 1970 it has mostly been four days.

At the Archive Day in Mannheim in 2007, the VdA's general assembly rejected the proposal for a biennial cycle.

The first city in which the German Archive Day took place a second time was Danzig (1904, 1928). It was held abroad (Austria, Danzig) in 1906, 1911, 1928 and 1930. The German Archives Day was held at two locations in 1930, 1963 and 1979. The archive day has already been held three times in Aachen, Dresden, Münster and Regensburg, and four times in Karlsruhe.
