from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hubert Weckbach (born October 28, 1935 in Rippberg ; † March 19, 2018 ) was a German archivist . From 1961 to 1997 he was deputy director of the Heilbronn City Archives and published a large number of essays and monographs, mainly on the history of Heilbronn .

Life

Weckbach graduated from the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium Heilbronn and entered in 1956 as a candidate for the senior archive service at the city of Heilbronn . After a delegation to the main state archive in Stuttgart in 1958/59 and a visit to the archive school in Marburg in 1959/60, he passed the diploma examination for senior archive service with distinction and then returned to the Heilbronn city archive, of which he was deputy director from 1961. Together with its long-time director (1963–1991) Helmut Schmolz , Weckbach shaped the development of the city archive, which moved twice during this time. In addition to the ongoing archival work, he was involved in the conception and development of the archive's exhibitions and wrote, mostly together with Schmolz, fundamental works on the city's history. In addition, he wrote a large number of essays on local history, designed illustrated books and edited other publications in the city archive. In total, his catalog raisonné includes almost 250 numbers.

Many of Weckbach's essays appeared in the local history supplement of the daily newspaper Heilbronner Demokratie , Schwaben und Franken , whose editorial support was also his responsibility. Together with Helmut Schmolz, he was the editor of the yearbook for Swabian-Franconian history published by the Heilbronn Historical Association , in which he also published. He was secretary and committee member in the historical association for over 20 years. When he retired in 1997 with the rank of City Archives Councilor (since 1990) after 41 years of service, he was the Heilbronn archivist with the longest term in office.
