Ahrbergen is a village in the municipality of Giesen in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony .

history

Church “St. Peter and Paul "
Church "Mary Mother of the Church"

Ahrbergen is mentioned for the first time during the reign of Bishop Hezilo von Hildesheim (1054-1079). On May 8, 1150, Cuno von Ahrbergen is one of the witnesses at the instruction given to Count Hermann II von Winzenburg by Bishop Bernhard I von Hildesheim .

Around 1150, Ahrbergen Castle was built on today's church hill above the Innerste , protected by a palisade fence. The castle existed for around 200 years. The old town of Ahrbergen was probably originally located on a hill north of today's village, as the name Hinter dem alten Dorfe indicates. In addition, remains of the old Landwehr are still preserved.

On March 1, 1974, Ahrbergen formed the new community of Giesen with five other communities.

Religions

The Catholic Church of St. Peter and Paul was built from rubble stones and completed in 1745, the same year the baroque furnishings come from . The west tower with its square floor plan was built around 1200. Due to the location of the church outside the village and the lack of the possibility to heat it, a Marienkapelle was built in the village in 1872 , which was used especially for the church services in winter. Since the chapel had become dilapidated and its size was no longer sufficient for the increased population of Ahrbergen, the church of St. Maria, mother of the church , located in the village was built in 1968 . From then on, the Peter and Paul Church was used as a cemetery church and the Church of St. Maria as a parish church. The Ahrberg parish, which comprised both churches, merged on November 1, 2014 in the parish of St. Vitus , based in Giesen. Before that, the two Ahrberg churches had formed a pastoral care unit with the two churches in Groß and Klein Giesen for several years . In Ahrbergen there is also the Catholic Kindergarten Maria Königin on Marienstraße.

As from 1945 evangelical expellees settled in Ahrbergen, which had been mostly Catholic until then, an Evangelical Lutheran chapel was built in 1951. After it fell victim to a fire in 1981, a new chapel was built on Kapellenweg in 1984. Since 1991 it has been called the Peace Church, and since 2009 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Paulus in Hasede .
