Bernhard I († July 20, 1154 in Walshausen near Hildesheim ) was Bishop of Hildesheim from 1130 to 1153 ( resignation ) .

Bernhard I was initially head of the Hildesheim Cathedral School . At the beginning of his tenure as bishop he founded the monastery of the Augustinian canons or choir women in Holle . Through personal visits to Pope Innocent II in Liège and at the Council of Reims in 1131, he completed the canonization of Bishop Godehard of Hildesheim . Thereupon he founded the Godehardikloster in Hildesheim in 1133 . In 1135, the Amelungsborn monastery was consecrated by Bishop Bernhard. 1142 he called all episcopal vassals to court day in Goslar together to the opposition against King Conrad III. to strengthen. In 1148 he was represented by Reinald von Dassel , who later became Archbishop of Cologne , at the Council of Reims. In the former imperial canonical monastery Ringelheim , the Konrad III. Handed over to the Hildesheim Bishop's See in 1150, he founded a Benedictine abbey with monks from St. Michael .

Bernhard I was buried in the St. Godehard Basilica in Hildesheim. Soon after his death he was venerated as a blessed man in the city and monastery of Hildesheim . His feast day, July 20th, was a public holiday until the 18th century. It is still a liturgical day of remembrance in the Basilica of St. Godehard.
