The Selterklippen are an elongated collection of limestone cliffs of the Selter ridge in the Alfelder Bergland , part of the Leinebergland in Lower Saxony . Most of them are designated as a 96 hectare nature reserve and also part of an FFH area .

Geographical location

As part of the Selters, the Selterklippen are located in the areas of the Samtgemeinde Freden of the Hildesheim district and the town of Einbeck of the Northeim district .

Nature reserve and FFH area

The Selterklippen were placed under nature protection in 2009 by the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal and Nature Conservation ( NLWKN ) . The nature reserve bears the statistical designation NSG BR 137. It extends south-west of Freden for about 6 km in length towards the south until shortly before Bruchhof , a part of the municipality of Kreiensen, and includes the central and southern part of the Selters with the Fredener, Esbecker, Erzhausener and the Naenser cliffs.

Moss-covered rocks and wild garlic in the NSG

According to the Protection Ordinance, the conservation, care and natural development of the Selterklippen as a habitat for animal and plant species in need of protection and their communities as well as a landscape of great rarity, special character, diversity and outstanding beauty takes place under protection.

The nature reserve is part of FFH area No. 169 "Deciduous forests and cliff areas in the Selter, Hills and Greener forest". For the scope of the nature reserve ordinance, the ordinance on the "Selter" landscape conservation area from 2004 was repealed.

nature and landscape

The Fredener, Esbecker, Erzhausener and Naenser cliffs rise up to 20 m - especially in the southern part of the Selterklippen nature reserve - by forming mighty, partly overhanging rock walls. Due to the location turned away from the sun and high amounts of precipitation, old, dead wood rich canyon and hillside mixed forests with species-rich moss and lichen vegetation develop here. The Selter is one of the largest Schatthangwald areas in Lower Saxony.

Wildlife

The nature reserve Selterklippen also serves to protect rare animal species such as wild cats , eagle owls and peregrine falcons . It is also home to a population of the great mouse- eared bat species .

legend

A prominent rock of the Selterklippen is the so-called Kammerkeule. This has the shape of a club, i.e. H. pointed at the bottom and thick at the top. According to legend, there is a cave with 5 chambers nearby. In the last chamber, a man guarded by a dog is said to sit at a stone table that has been banished there by a magician. The rock is symbolically included in the coat of arms of the village of Erzhausen to the east .
