The Northeimer Seenplatte water bird reserve is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Northeim in the Northeim district .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 042 is around 80  hectares in size. It is completely part of the EU bird sanctuary "Leinetal bei Salzderhelden". In the north-west, the nature reserve borders directly on the nature reserves " Leineniederung Salzderhelden " and " Polder I in the Salzderhelden flood retention basin ". The area has been under protection since March 2, 1984. It has been recognized by the EU as a "special protection area of ​​natural habitats" since 1983 . The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Northeim.

The nature reserve is located in the Leineaue northwest of Northeim. It protects part of the Northeimer Seenplatte between the federal autobahn 7 in the south, the north-south route and high-speed route Hanover-Würzburg in the east, the walling of Polder V of the Salzderhelden flood retention basin in the north-west and state road 572 in the west.

Flora and fauna

The area includes a plurality of through gravel mining resulting lakes and the surrounding areas. While parts of the west and north of the nature reserve are used as grassland or arable land, gravel mining has ended in most of the lakes. They serve as a habitat for water-bound animal and plant species and are of great importance for breeding and resting bird species . In the area of ​​the nature reserve there are over 170 species of birds, many of which also breed here. B. Great crested grebes , gray and Egyptian goose , little ringed plover , bag tit and kingfisher . There is also a cormorant colony.

During the bird migration are u. a. Little Gulls , terns as river , coastal , mourning and little terns , various grebes as Schwarzhals- , Rothals- , minke and grebes and loons as fine specimens and red-throated divers and sea ducks such as mourning , eider and velvet scoter observed. Numerous birds overwinter here, including diving ducks such as pochard and tufted duck as well as golden-bellied ducks and saws such as goose , dwarf and medium- sized saws . Besides are coots and grebes found. The bittern also overwinters in the nature reserve .

A hiking trail runs through the nature reserve , which was laid out for the Expo 2000 in Hanover as a "water theme trail". There are observation points for nature observation in several places.
