The Denkershäuser pond is a still water created by a sinkhole , which is located on the western edge of the eponymous Denkershausen , about 4 km northeast of Northeim , Lower Saxony . With a length of about 700 meters, the pond is only a good two meters deep.

Emergence

This “pond”, unlike the man-made gravel ponds of the Northeimer Seenplatte , which is about four kilometers to the west, was created by a natural geological process. The terrain sank through subrosion of an underground Zechstein layer, and the pond was formed in the hollow. It has no above-ground drain.

By creating a moat in the years 1857–63 and a second drainage operation in 1928–30, the lake level was lowered by around 1 m, which reduced the water area from around 100 ha to around 5 ha. The aim of the measures was to create agricultural land. Meadows were essentially created from the earlier lake area, as the soils are floodplain and gley instead of the loess soil that is otherwise widespread in the area .

The bottom of the break-in basin consists of up to 12 m thick flat bog peat . After the Second World War, the city of Northeim planned to remove the peat as a supply for mud baths in Bad Grund . The plan was rejected as unsuitable for this analysis a composition with insufficient humic acids - concentration showed. The Hildesheim district government decreed nature conservation in 1948.

natural reserve

The Großseggenried created here , which has the character of reed beds in the bank area , is a rare biotope in this region and is therefore under nature protection. The designated nature reserve of only eight hectares includes, in addition to the pure pond area, an adjoining wet meadow zone .

Characteristic breeding bird species here are moorhen , coot , reed bunting and reed warbler . The proven fish species include bream , rudd and roach . The amphibians include the tree frog and pond newt .
