The polder I in the detention basin Salzderhelden is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxon city Einbeck and Northeim in Northeim district .

geography

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG BR 097 is around 523  hectares in size. It consists of two sub-areas that border directly on the " Leineniederung Salzderhelden " nature reserve between the two parts . The southern part of the nature reserve also borders on the " Water Bird Reserve Northeimer Seenplatte " nature reserve . The nature reserve is part of the EU bird sanctuary "Leinetal bei Salzderhelden". It is also a wildlife sanctuary and serves to protect endangered game birds . The hunt for partridges , mute swans , wild geese and wild ducks , coots and seagulls is prohibited in the nature reserve . The area has been a nature reserve since September 16, 1995. The responsible lower nature conservation authority is the district of Northeim.

The nature reserve is located in the Leiniederung between Northeim in the south and the Einbeck district of Salzderhelden in the north. It places part of Polder I as part of the Salzderhelden flood retention basin under protection and lies entirely within the walls of the flood retention basin . It is traversed by the Leine and flooded or dammed when the Leine floods and when the flood retention basin is blocked. The remaining part of Polder I is completely part of the “Leineniederung Salzderhelden” nature reserve.

The northern part of the nature reserve is characterized by extensive grassland areas with interspersed groups of trees, hedges and ditches , the Leine and a large still water . The grassland areas are partly used extensively and partly moderately intensively. Partial areas are occupied by wet meadows rich in sedge . The still water lies east of the Leine and has been artificially created as a secondary habitat. It is characterized by an alternation of shallow and deeper water areas. The bank areas are mainly occupied by reeds and bushes. The course of the river Leine is accompanied by bushes and gallery forests .

The southern part is also characterized by grassland areas and water areas on a bed load barrier in the Leine. In the area of the bed load dam, the course of the river was widened in order to reduce the flow velocity and to ensure the deposition of rubble and sediments from the Leine and the Rhume , which flows into the Leine a little above the nature reserve. This ensures that the dam in Salzderhelden is not blocked. At the same time, valuable shallow water habitats have been created along the Leine. The banks of the Leine are taken up by alluvial forest here . In the course of nature conservation measures carried out in 2011, additional gravel banks were created in the area of the bed load barrier as a retreat and breeding ground for birds .
