The Giesener Wald is a forest and nature reserve in the city of Hildesheim and in the municipality of Giesen in the Hildesheim district in Lower Saxony .

Nature reserve

General

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 256 is around 142  hectares . Most of the nature reserve is part of the FFH area "Haseder Busch, Giesener Berge, Gallberg, Finkenberg". To the south it borders on the " Osterberg ", " Giesener Teiche " and " Lange Dreisch and Osterberg " nature reserves . The area has been under nature protection since June 4, 2020. It replaced the protected landscape area "Giesener Berge und Teiche" (marked LSG HI 38 and LSG HI-S-12) , which was designated in 1967 . Responsible lower nature conservation authorities are the city of Hildesheim and the district of Hildesheim.

The nature reserve is located northwest of Hildesheim in the north of the Giesen mountains . It is a forest area, dominated by beech forests , under nature protection. The beech forests are dominated by the common beech . Sycamore maple and bird cherry are particularly popular . The herb layer is of Woodruff , Goldnessel , forest barley , Carex sylvatica , Exceptional witchweeds , Mercurialis perennis , forest millet and Ähriger devil's claw formed. In addition, oak-hornbeam forests and small-scale riparian forests are pronounced. The oak-hornbeam forests of stalk and sessile oak , hornbeam , field maple formed, ash and wild cherry. There are also blood-red dogwood , common hazel , hawthorn, real daphne , eccentric cones , red honeysuckle and cornel cherry . In the herb layer settle bellflower , wood bedstraw , Türkenbundlilie , early purple orchid , Cowslip , wonder violet , Shaggy violets , hepatica and Blue Red Gromwell . The alluvial forest communities with black alder and ash as the dominant tree species grow along a stream that rises in the nature reserve and runs through the area in a northerly direction. Sumpfpippau , Winkelsegge , common witch's herb, great balsam and high cowslip settle in the herb layer . Sometimes the forest communities here are also characterized as moist mixed oak and hornbeam forests. Other moist mixed oak and hornbeam forests are growing in the transition to the Giesener ponds in the south of the protected area. The damp mixed oak and hornbeam forests are primarily formed by pedunculate oak, black alder, winter linden , hornbeam, bird cherry, common hazel and double-fluted hawthorn . Wood anemones , yellow anemones , arum , grass clown , meadowfoam , spotted lungwort , cowslip, common witchweed and stately orchid settle in the herb layer . The forest communities are predominantly near-natural and often have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

The forest communities in the northwest and west are characterized by former middle forests with a species-rich herb layer and mighty old oaks. Scattered in the nature reserve, Schneitel hornbeams stand as relics of earlier forest use.

The area is habitat among other gray , black , medium , non-ferrous and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker , Stock Dove , Kleiber , nightingale , oriole , pied flycatcher , wood warbler , treecreeper , marsh tit , woodcock and red kite . It is also home to forest bat species , including the great mouse- eared bat and Bechstein's bat , and the butterflies, the great schiller butterfly and the imperial mantle . The area is the habitat of various snails and amphibians , including the crested newt . The wildcat is also native here.

In the north-west of the Giesen forest there are culturally and historically significant barrows . The burial ground consists of 43 burial mounds.

In the southwest of the nature reserve, a grassland area is included in the area, which borders on the Giesener Wald and closes a gap to the "Osterberg" nature reserve. The nature reserve borders mainly on agricultural areas in the west and east . In the north, it partially borders on the residential developments in the Giesen area. In the southeast there is a former armed forces firing range within the nature reserve.
