The cave area in Kleiner Deister is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony town of Springe in the Hanover region .

The nature reserve with the registration number NSG HA 244 is approximately 109  hectares . It is almost congruent with the almost 107 hectare FFH area of ​​the same name . The nature reserve was designated as of December 14, 2018. Within the scope of the Nature Conservation Ordinance , it replaces the previous " Saupark " nature reserve , by which it is completely surrounded. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.

The nature reserve is located south of Springe on the Kleiner Deister , a ridge of the Calenberger Bergland , within the historic Saupark hunting area. It protects exposed slopes of the Kleiner Deister to the northeast. Within the protected area there is an approximately two kilometer long limestone cliff edge. On the slopes of the Kleiner Deister in the nature reserve, woodruff beech forest predominates . On steep, rocky slopes, rich in stone protection, canyon and mixed slope forests of shady form are predominant. Here are joined by mountains and maple and elm and Sommerlinde to the otherwise prevailing beech . The herbaceous layer is of wild garlic , hollow corydalis and Buschwindröschen formed. In the canyon forests need to do is join baneberry , Perennial honesty , Fragile bladderfern and Hart's . The forests in the nature reserve are largely left to their natural development. They have a high proportion of old and dead wood .

Numerous caves have formed on the steep walls of the limestone cliffs. They are of particular importance for different bat species such as greater mouse-eared , pond bat , Daubenton's bat , whiskered bat , Brandt's bat , Natterer's bat and brown long-eared . The rocks are breeding grounds for eagle owls . Ferns , mosses and hawkweeds as well as wall rue settle on the steep walls . The nature reserve is also the habitat of wild cats , black woodpeckers and other woodpeckers .

View to the Hallermundskopf

There are numerous springs in the nature reserve , some of them also limestone springs . The spring areas are the habitat of the spring damsel and other highly specialized species, including alpine vortex worms and cave fleas , as well as swamp beetles , stoneflies and caddis flies . Mountain newts and thread newts settle in places where the streams are dammed . Typical mosses settle in the source areas. The moist stream valleys are the habitat of the fire salamander . The nature reserve is also home to numerous snails and various types of butterflies , beetles and spiders.

The nature reserve is completely surrounded by other forests of the "Saupark" nature reserve. Several paths run through the area. The Hallermundskopf with the remains of Hallermund Castle is located within the nature reserve.
