The Otternhagener Moor is a nature reserve in the Lower Saxony municipalities of Neustadt am Rübenberge and Wedemark in the Hanover region .

description

The nature reserve with the sign NSG HA 034 is 974  hectares in size. It is part of the FFH area "Helstorfer, Otternhagener and Schwarzes Moor". The nature reserve is located immediately north of the nature reserve " Schwarzes Moor bei Resse ", from which it is separated by a narrow mineral soil ridge, and immediately south of the nature reserve " Helstorfer Moor ". The area has been a nature reserve since May 11, 1995. It replaces the "Otternhagener Moor" nature reserve designated in November 1970 and the "Otternhagener Moor II" nature reserve designated in August 1988. The lower responsible nature conservation authority is the Hanover region.

The nature reserve is located east of Neustadt am Rübenberge and west of Bissendorf between the districts of Otternhagen and Scharrel of the city of Neustadt am Rübenberge and Reese , a district of the municipality of Wedemark. It is part of the Hanoverian Moorgeest , an Ice Age geest and ground moraine landscape.

It provides a high moor area under protection, in a flat, inclined to the northwest valley between deposits from the Saale ice age has formed. The formation of the bog began around 3000 years ago.

The up to four meters thick mud was in the past drained and rural Handtorfstiche teilabgetorft. It is characterized by moor and quarry forest . There are also open bog areas with bog heather , cotton grass and peat moss . In the central area of ​​the moor, in particular, unbroken raised moor has been preserved. In the former peat cuttings, extensive peat moss and swinging grass communities have developed. Some former peat cuttings have been merged to form still waters.

The north and west mostly moist are grassland areas in the nature reserve included which as a buffer to the adjacent agricultural land take.

The nature reserve is drained to the north to the Neue Auter and to the west to the Auter , a tributary of the Leine .

Since May 17, 2019, this special habitat in the southern area of ​​the moor can be explored with the help of a 350-meter-long moor adventure trail at a total of 9 experience stations. A woodchip path leads to the viewpoint at the dragonfly water.

Development of the area

As part of the LIFE + project “Hannoversche Moorgeest”, several moors on an area of ​​2,240 hectares, including the Otternhagener Moor, are to be ecologically upgraded by 2023. To optimize rainwater retention, existing drainage systems are to be dismantled and new dams and dams are to be built. In addition, areas have already been decussed , small bodies of water released and grassland areas extensified. Information boards inform those interested on site.
