The Auter is a right tributary of the Leine, a good 22 km long in the north of the Hanover region .
Surname
The name of the river is derived from the place name Otternhagen, which was first mentioned in 1215 as in otherenhagen and later also appears as Auternhagen . This place name is a compound from the basic word -hagen ( Old Saxon -hagan , thorn bush ) and the genitive * Ōthers of the personal name * Ōthero as a defining word. The place name meant the enclosed settlement of Ōthero .
course
The Auter rises about one kilometer northwest of the district of Kaltenweide, which belongs to the city of Langenhagen, and flows from there in a westerly direction along the border of the Kananohe nature reserve . It then crosses the L380 south of Resse and bends north at the Otternhagen district, which belongs to the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge . Shortly behind the village, the New and Old Auter flow towards it, with a multitude of ditches flowing into the Auter along its entire length. A little later the Auter crosses Scharnhorst, which belongs to Basse , a little later Averhoy and shortly afterwards finally flows into the Leine.
