Gernulf Garbe

Gernulf Garbe (born July 29, 1940 in Kassel ) is a German sports physician , orthopedist and chirotherapist as well as a former bodybuilder . He was German bodybuilding champion in 1963 ( Mr. Germany ).

Life

After graduating from high school in 1959, Gernulf Garbe studied medicine at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Their medical faculty earned him a doctorate in 1967 with the dissertation reimplantation and transplantation of broken and loosened joint parts to become Dr. med. After the state examination , also passed in Göttingen in 1968 , Garbe returned to Hanover, where he has since practiced as a doctor, from 1969 first as a specialist in orthopedics and then from 1973 to 1983 as senior physician for trauma surgery at the Friederikenstift, the teaching hospital of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) .

He then worked as a resident doctor in orthopedics, chiropractic and sports medicine, most recently in a joint practice with Gerhard Riehle.

Since 1988 Garbe has been an honorary professor for sports medicine at the Sports Science Institute of the University of Hanover . He also worked as a teacher at the German Society for Manual Medicine (DGMM) based in Boppard .

Garbe holds patents on the Hallux valgus splint, the Elafix splint and two foot trimmers. He is a member of the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery (DGOOC) , the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) and the German Association of Sports Physicians (DGSP) .

The sports medicine specialist has also emerged as an athlete: in 1963 he was the winner of the fourth German bodybuilding championship in class II (over 172 centimeters) and overall winner ( Mr. Germany ). In 1966, together with Arnold Schwarzenegger , Albert Busek , Erich Janner and others, he was one of the founders of the German Strength Sports Association (DKV), later renamed the German Bodybuilding and Fitness Association .

Garbe is the author of Fit Through Bodybuilding. Athletic and Medical Instructions (1977), which had eight editions by 1987. He has also written articles for medical journals and the strength sports magazines Kraft Sport Revue and Sportrevue . He also worked for radio and television on various occasions and participated in programs on the topics of prevention , rehabilitation , fitness and bodybuilding , such as the television report Bodybuilding - Praised What Makes You Strong (1976).

Gernulf Garbe, who lived in Hanover for a long time, now lives in Hemmingen-Westerfeld .
