Johann Georg Conrad Oberdieck (born August 30, 1794 in Wilkenburg , † February 24, 1880 in Herzberg am Harz ) was a German Lutheran pastor and one of the most important German pomologists of the 19th century.

Career

Oberdieck was (born July 19, 1756), the son of evangelical pastor Heinrich Christoph Oberdieck in Wilkenburg in Hannover and studied, after visiting the Lyceum in Hannover , 1812-1815 Theology at the University of Göttingen , where he a member of the Corps Hannovera was . He earned his studies through private lessons.

He took up his first position after graduation in Lüneburg as a sub-principal of the Michaelis School . Four years later he initially worked for the superintendent Brase in Wunstorf and in the same year he received his first community in the town of Bardowick , which mainly cultivated gardens and fruit. Sales of these products, always in Hamburg , stalled because of the aftermath of the wars of liberation and the French occupation . Caring for the well-being of his community, Oberdieck, who had already dealt intensively with the natural sciences in addition to theology in Göttingen , set about improving the quality of the fruit grown in Bardowick, thus increasing sales in nearby Hamburg with new, better ones Promote varieties . With the establishment of a small tree nursery, the pastor became a pomologist. This first tree nursery was completely destroyed by frost in the winter of 1822/23; the event prompted him to publish his first pomological publication.

He obtained his apple varieties from the most important breeder of the time, the doctor and pomologist Adrian Diel, and due to the limited space of his nursery, he planted varietal trees that could carry a large number of different grafted apple varieties at the same time. His collection, which is recognized by experts, included old fruit varieties already described, but also new varieties of the time.

Oberdieck became superintendent in Sulingen in 1831 and in Nienburg / Weser in 1839 ; his collection of varieties moved both times and grew to over 4000 trees in Nienburg. The move on the occasion of his next transfer to Jeinsen near Pattensen in 1853 was likely to have been a logistical challenge, even if only the transplantable specimens made the move.

The further difficult winter of 1870/71 led to renewed concern with frost damage and its avoidance.

In 1878 he retired in Herzberg am Harz , but remained active as a respected and honored pomologist until his death.

Apple varieties named after Oberdieck

The list of apple varieties refers to Oberdieck's Renette and Oberdieck's Taubenapfel as important cultivated apples of the 19th century. The teaching garden of the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences in Weihenstephan is also named after Oberdieck.
