Werner Schuricht

Werner Schuricht (born April 26, 1936 ) is a German pomologist and author of specialist books. He did research in the German Democratic Republic and was involved in founding the pomologists' association after reunification.

Life

Werner Schuricht obtained his Abitur in Burgstädt and then studied horticulture from 1954 to 1959 at the University of Leipzig and at the Humboldt University in Berlin . From 1960 to 1961 he completed an internship at the “ people's own estate ” in Egeln . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Special Crops at the Humboldt University until he was employed as the head of “Special Agronomists” in the Erfurt district from 1963 to 1965 . From 1965 he worked as a scientific assistant at the University of Jena, where he obtained his doctorate in 1972 with studies on the yield behavior of the sour cherry . Since 1970 he was head of a working group at the local institute for plant nutrition in Jena- Zwätze . In 1994 he ended his professional career and went into retirement.

As a pensioner, he was involved in the pomologists' association , which he was involved in founding in 1991, and traveled through Germany as the “apple pope” to identify old apple varieties and to promote their preservation. According to his own information, he can reliably identify and determine 500 to 600 of the 2000 varieties available in Germany. He is an editorial assistant for the publication of the annual journal of the Pomologists Association and was involved in the creation of several variety gardens to preserve old fruit varieties.

In 2004 he received the Oberdieck Prize .

He is married and lives in Jena.
