About this picture

Egeln is a city in Saxony-Anhalt ( Germany ). It belongs to the Egelner Mulde community .

geography

The small town of Egeln with around 3,500 inhabitants is located at the junction of federal highways 81 and 180 , in the middle of the city triangle of Aschersleben , Halberstadt and Magdeburg . It is located about 20 kilometers southwest of Magdeburg halfway to Halberstadt in the Salzlandkreis in the Egelner Mulde an der Bode .

history

The fertile lowland around Egeln was already populated by people in the Paleolithic Age. A Bronze Age circular moat also indicates prehistoric settlement of the area. Egeln was possibly founded by the Germanic Angles tribe . At least the name “leeches” goes back etymologically to the fishing people. It was first in 941 as "Osteregulon" with a new fort by King Otto I notarized. This fort served to protect the ford through the Bodefluss, in front of which the military roads from Erfurt , Quedlinburg and Goslar met and, united in one road, continued to Magdeburg.

In 10./11. In the 19th century, the Askanians built a planned new town northwest of the Bode with a market and church protected by a new castle. These conquered the nobles of Hadmersleben in 1250. They had the place fortified with a strong wall and granted it market, customs and city rights. At the request of his wife, Jutta von Blankenburg , the nobleman Otto von Hadmersleben founded the Marienstuhl Monastery on the site of the old Osteregulon settlement in 1259 , which existed as a Cistercian abbey until 1809 .

The city's first seal can be found on a document from 1317. The city coat of arms of Egeln with the lion in the shield over the wall and the open gate is recorded in 1365, when the city was re-certified that business could be done on the market . This market was of national importance and was only opened after a strict examination by market masters and councilors. In addition to the usual merchandise, hamster skins in particular (150,000 in 1815) were traded here. 84 full citizens with the right to brew beer had the right to brew the famous Egelei beer, which also sold well. As a so-called Immediatstadt , Egeln had been directly subordinate to the Brandenburg-Prussian Duchy of Magdeburg since 1680 and was in the Holzkreis until 1807 . From July 1, 1816, the city was assigned to the Wanzleben district in the Magdeburg administrative district of the province of Saxony .

Until the middle of the 19th century, all long-distance traffic on the post and military roads led directly through Egeln and brought trade and handicrafts to prosperity. With the increasing development of technical traffic, the narrow streets of the small town turned out to be a traffic obstacle and all long-distance traffic was diverted past leeches. Nevertheless, the city retained central functions for the surrounding area. In Egeln there are all types of schools, a doctor's center, pharmacy, childcare, two banks, a district office, a modern sports center with an outdoor pool, football stadium, beach volleyball court and a two-field sports hall as well as three supermarkets. The city has also established itself as a cultural center with events on offer, particularly at the Egeln castle and on the market square.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community Bleckendorf was incorporated. There he became part of the Egeln-Nord district.

education

high school

The grammar school was founded in 1925 as an upper secondary school. Due to the large catchment area, a student dormitory was also part of the high school for many years. When many new high schools were built in the early 1990s, the catchment area decreased. This made the dormitory unnecessary. Due to the decreasing number of students, the high school was closed in 2015. Even strong protests by the population could not prevent this.
