Herwig Paretzke

Herwig G. Paretzke (born  February 16, 1944 in Bleckendorf ) is a German radiation physicist . He is a professor at the Technical University of Munich and at the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck .

Scientific activity

Herwig Paretzke studied physics after graduating from the Oskar-von-Miller-Gymnasium in Munich at the then Technical University of Munich and began his professional career at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching . He then moved to the Society for Radiation and Environmental Research , now the Helmholtz Center in Munich. There he took over the management of the risk analysis group at the Institute for Radiation Protection. During this time he received his doctorate with a thesis in radiation physics at the Technical University of Munich . In 1993 he took over the management of the Institute for Radiation Protection as successor to Wolfgang Jacobi . Herwig Paretzke completed his habilitation in 1999 at the Leopold-Franzens-University Innsbruck in radiation physics, ion physics and environmental physics. He is honorary professor at the Faculty of Physics at the Technical University of Munich . In 2009 Herwig Paretzke retired due to old age; his successor as head of the Institute for Radiation Protection was Peter Jacob .

Membership in professional organizations

Herwig Paretzke was head of the Radiation and Medical Physics Association of the German Physical Society from 1999 . Since 1987 he has been a member of the International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements . He was also a member of the International Commission on Radiation Protection and, from 1994 to 1998, of the German Commission on Radiation Protection .

Private life

Herwig Paretzke is married and has two grown children. He is a member of the Rotary Service Club . After his retirement, he went on a circumnavigation of the world with his deep-sea catamaran Jonathan .
