Life

Wolfgang Jacobi was born the son of the chemist Constantin Jacobi . After studying physics and biophysics from 1946 to 1951 at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, he received his doctorate in 1953. He first worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics and from 1957 at the Hahn Meitner Institute in Berlin, later as head of the radiation physics department. After his habilitation in 1962, he became an adjunct professor at the Technical University of Berlin in 1964 . In 1972 he took over the management of the Institute for Radiation Protection of what was then the Society for Radiation and Environmental Research near Munich as the successor to Felix Wachsmann , which he held until his retirement in 1993; Herwig Paretzke was his successor .

Wolfgang Jacobi's main research areas were exposure to radon and the improvement of radiation protection concepts, for example he was involved in the introduction of the effective dose . Wolfgang Jacobi was a member and three times chairman (1974/1975 as founding chairman, 1979/1980 and 1991/1992) of the German radiation protection commission from 1974 to 1980 and from 1984 to 1992 . From 1977 to 1996 he was a member of the International Commission on Radiation Protection , a longstanding member of UNSCEAR and President of the German-Swiss Association for Radiation Protection in 1969. Wolfgang Jacobi was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1979 and the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class in 1992. The International Commission on Radiation Protection awarded him the Rolf M.
