The German Horticultural Museum in Erfurt is showing a permanent exhibition with a wide range of topics on around 1,500 m² of exhibition space in the historic defensive barracks of the Cyriaksburg citadel . Garden and plant enthusiasts can find out about the growth and use of plants, the history of horticulture and garden art . The museum is unique of its kind in Germany and Europe. It is located on the grounds of the Erfurt horticultural exhibition (egapark).

history

Parts of the fortress grounds were redesigned into gardens in 1885 on the initiative of the Erfurt Beautification Association. In 1919, the city of Erfurt acquired the Cyriaksburg citadel and the site, which it used for exhibitions and several garden shows . The Horticultural Museum was opened in 1961 at the same time as the “I. International Horticultural Exhibition of the Socialist Countries ”opened.

In 1992 it was decided to redesign the museum. Connected with this were renovations and further extensions under the direction of the architect Peter Kulka . Since 1995 the "Foundation of the German Horticultural Museum Erfurt", behind which the Free State of Thuringia , the City of Erfurt and the Zentralverband Gartenbau e. V. stand, responsible for the museum. It was reopened in 2000 with a modern and experience-oriented design.

Facilities

Since the reopening, the museum has had an extensive permanent exhibition entitled “The whole world in the garden”. It deals with the history of horticulture , the biology of plants and modern techniques for their breeding , cultivation and marketing. Original exhibition techniques such as the kinetic plant “Valentine” or multimedia processes allow museum visitors to discover new things and see what they have known from new perspectives. During the tour, the 40 m deep underground fortress well can also be viewed . A herb garden has been created in one of the former cannon yards of the Cyriaksburg citadel.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, temporary exhibitions are shown on a regular basis.

The museum's collection includes, among other things, historical garden tools , a collection of graphics and over 400 paper mache or plaster replicas of fruits from the 19th century.

The museum has a specialist library with a focus on horticultural literature from the GDR and current horticultural magazines. It can be used after registering by telephone. A development association was founded a few years ago to support the museum .
