Gerhard Friedrich (biologist)

Gerhard Friedrich (born December 6, 1910 in Leipzig ; † January 15, 2003 in Dresden ) was a German plant physiologist , pomologist and agricultural scientist.

Life

Gerhard Friedrich studied plant physiology with Wilhelm Ruhland at the University of Leipzig . Then he went to the fruit growing research institute Jork in the old country near Hamburg. Under the direction of Ernst-Ludwig Loewel , he conducted research there on questions of scab treatment in apples and developed a spore trap for ascospores . He then worked at the Stuttgart plant protection office. In 1951 he was appointed professor at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg as director of the "Institute for Fruit and Vegetable Growing". There he was the doctoral supervisor of Gerhard Schmidt, who was killed by police officers in the uprising on June 17 . Friedrich compared the conduct of the GDR judges' conduct against other insurgents as a participant in the proceedings with proceedings by Roland Freisler at the People's Court during the Nazi dictatorship.

In 1956 he moved to the "Institute for Horticulture Dresden-Pillnitz of the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences" in Dresden- Pillnitz as director . There he established research on the physiology of plants and directed it towards the difficult area of fruit trees, as perennial plants. During the following years he carried out basic research on biochemical relationships on the processes of blossom and yield formation in fruit trees, taking into account the environmental conditions and the behavior of the varieties. His results now allow research from molecular genetics to be correctly interpreted.

In addition, practical fruit growing was always a concern of his, which is why he initiated the establishment of an experimental farm in Prussendorf . This developed into a central contact point for fruit growers and scientists from the entire Eastern European economic area . Friedrich was of the opinion that fruit should not only be grown on inferior areas and that fruit cultivation should be intensified. This view did not correspond to the political wishes of the SED leadership, which therefore caused Friedrich to be forcibly retired in 1973 . However, he was allowed to keep his desk at the institute, which he used to pass on his knowledge in books despite the humiliation by the political leadership. Up until old age he came to the institute at 7:00 a.m.
