history

history

Ceramic shards from the 10th to 12th centuries, found during an excavation in March 2012 in Wennigsen
Wennigsen was first mentioned in a document around 1200 as Wenekessen (left column, 9th / 8th row from the bottom)
Merian engraving by Wennigsen around 1650
Map from 1751
Fire station as the center of the former farming village of Wennigsen around 1920

Wennigsen and its neighbors probably emerged during the settlement and clearing period of the Frankish Empire between the 5th and 8th centuries. The oldest settlement finds to date in the form of pit houses and pottery shards were made in March 2012 during archaeological excavations at the new construction of the Vogelnest kindergarten in Neustadtstrasse about 200 m from the monastery. These finds were dated to the 10th to 12th centuries.

The first written mention (between 1199 and 1206) of Wennigsen, which is only available in a 13th-century copy in the Amelungsborn monastery book , is in a document from Bishop Hartbert von Hildesheim . This document certifies that Count Bernhard von Poppenburg from Wennigsen renounces the administration of the salt works in Swalenhusen near Hemmendorf , which the Amelungsborn monastery had transferred to his father . The existence of this document shows that at that time there was a settlement of Count Bernhard von Poppenburg in Wennigsen. Count Poppenburg had a coat of arms in the seal with a crossbar on which there were three five-petalled roses. This Poppenburg rose is still used today by the Wennigsen community as a coat of arms.

In 1330, the rights of 88 surrounding villages in the Deisterwald were redistributed, with Wennigsen being named as jointly entitled. A document from the year 1352, in which the abbesses of the Wunstorf and Wennigsen monasteries, as well as Gerhard I von Schauenburg , the bishop of Minden and other nobles are witnesses, regulates, among other things, the separation of the Wennigsen forest from the Redderse forest .

During the Thirty Years' War the place was almost completely destroyed by fire, and the population suffered robbery and looting. In 1626 the monastery was looted.

Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg (united to the Principality of Hanover after his death) assigned jurisdiction to the place after the division of the Grand Bailiwick of Calenberg in the newly founded Amt Calenberg; the Wennigsen district court still exists today.

The discovery of hard coal in the Deister and its extraction from 1636 onwards brought a strong economic boom. The first documented mention of the coal mine on the Bröhn dates back to 1639. Due to the poor quality, the coal was unsuitable for blacksmithing and was mainly used for lime kilns in Linden or in Forest glassworks as used in Bredenbeck - Steinkrug .

From 1859 to 1885 Wennigsen was the main town of the Wennigsen office , which included the area of today's cities Barsinghausen, Gehrden, the municipality of Wennigsen and the western parts of the city of Ronnenberg. In 1885, the Office Wennigsen with the Office was Linden to the district Linden combined, which existed until 1932 and then the district Hannover slammed. Until December 31, 2004, Wennigsen was part of the Hanover administrative district , which, like the other administrative districts of Lower Saxony, was dissolved in 2004.

In 1872 the railway line from Linden to Haste ( Deisterbahn ) was put into operation. Today this railway line forms part of the S1, S2 and S21 lines of the Hanover S-Bahn .

In August 1957, Horst Mohaupt (1927-2006) was appointed municipal director and held this office for 12 years. In 1969 it was decided to merge with the neighboring communities of Argestorf, Bredenbeck, Degersen, Evestorf, Holtensen and Sorsum to form a single community of Wennigsen (Deister) on January 1, 1970. This amalgamation and the law regulating it served as a model for the territorial and administrative reforms that followed a few years later throughout Lower Saxony. Reinhard Feldkamp was the first parish director of the new large parish.

In the local elections in Lower Saxony in 2006 , Christoph Meineke, born in 1979 (independent), was elected full-time mayor in a runoff election on September 24, 2006 . He took over his office on January 1, 2007 from Renate Borrmann (SPD) and community director Kunibert Ewert (CDU). For many years after his election he was the youngest full-time mayor of Lower Saxony . In 2014 he was confirmed in office with almost 90 percent of the votes.

Place name

Around 1200 the place was called Wennekessen , in 1230 the place name was Wennicigissen . It was not until 1932 that the name was officially set to Wennigsen. The name could be derived from wenec = little, tiny and mean small settlement.

The place name has always changed slightly.

Re-establishment of the SPD

Memorial to Kurt Schumacher and the Wennigs conference

At the Wennigs Conference from October 5 to 7, 1945, after the Nazi dictatorship, the SPD was re -established in what was then the Petersen station hotel . The place was chosen, among other things, because of the rail connection to the former Bückeburg airport (now Bückeburg Army Airfield ) and the social democratic tradition of the place. At what was referred to as the first central gathering of social democrats , social democrats from all parts of Germany and the London executive in exile came together. The meeting decided to appoint Kurt Schumacher to lead the reconstruction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the three western occupation zones . A memorial plaque at today's Hotel Calenberger Hof in Bahnhofstrasse and a memorial opposite the train station remind of this event.

Population development

In 1925 the villages that make up today's Wennigsen had a total of 5,458 inhabitants. After a slight decrease to 5444 in 1933, there was an increase to 5807 inhabitants by 1939. From 1940 onwards, the Wennigs population increased until 1985 and has remained constant at around 14,000 since then, with 3% foreigners being represented. Since 2005 the trend has been falling slightly. The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the Hanover region are assuming stagnation in the future . Despite the negative birth rate, this results from the influx of foreigners. The agglomeration of the state capital increases its attractiveness and compensates for the negative birth rate in Wennigsen. In recent years, the total birth rate in Wennigsen was 1.39 children per woman and thus 0.04 children below the national average of 1.43 (2014). To keep the population it would have to be around 2.1. Conversely, this means that around a third of children (0.7) are missing per generation.

Birth development 1940 to 2011

The average age in Wennigsen is 43.8 years. The 41 to 60-year-olds make up the largest population group with 31%, followed by the elderly with 29%. In third place is the so-called parent generation with 18%. Their share loses around 10% compared to the aforementioned groups. Children (6%) and adolescents (16%) have only a slightly higher proportion of 22% together. The absolute proportion of women is 7,113, that of men 6,710. The range of variation of the age groups between the individual villages is very different. The 41 to 59 year olds are very homogeneously distributed at 4%. For the 60 plus generation, the difference is 16%. Here Sorsum has the lowest share with 19.1%, the Wennigser Mark with 30.3% the highest share. The proportion of children is also heterogeneously distributed and fluctuates between 1.9% (Argestorf) and 6.4% (Holtensen).

The number of commuters who worked outside Wennigsen - mostly in the Hanover region - in 2004 was 3,576 compared to 1,252 inbound commuters.

Citizen participation

Wiki loves monuments: Citizens enrich Wikipedia with their knowledge and photos

In September 2011, the municipal administration organized a local photo competition with Wikimedia Germany on architectural and cultural monuments. The aim was to document and publicize historical objects. Of the 311 photos submitted, one of the Holtens Church came eleventh in the national competition. Another positive effect was the newly created register of monuments in Wennigsen and numerous independent articles on local topics within Wikipedia .

Climate action program : Citizens develop a municipal roadmap for reducing CO 2

Between 2009 and 2010, the climate protection action program with 52 proposals for reducing the CO 2 balance was developed with large public participation . The Wennigs currently consume an average of 6.9 tonnes per year, which is to be reduced to less than 2 tonnes per year by 2050 in order to meet the targets of the Kyoto Protocol . The climate protection action program was decided by the local council at the end of 2010 and is intended to be the future guide for all local stakeholders.

The climate promise: regional alliance for changing energy behavior

In the spring of 2011, the “Climate promise: Wennigsen and the Calenberger Land tackle it!” Was launched. The participants undertake to save at least 2% on the previous year in all CO 2 -related areas such as mobility, energy, nutrition and consumption within one year . The data are evaluated online by the University of Bremen in a citizens' panel and compared with the regions of Bremen, Bremerhaven and three regions in Austria and Spain. In September 2011, the German UNESCO Commission recognized this project as the United Nations' exemplary education offensive .

Citizen participation project Hohes Feld: redesign of a residential area

The community of Wennigsen carried out the participation project “Hohes Feld” at the end of 2011 with the support of the Bremen University's Institute for Information Management . The aim was to redesign the public areas (playgrounds, green spaces and residential area) in an aging residential area from the 1970s. The demographic gap is very pronounced there, two thirds of 550 inhabitants are older than 60 years. Over 60% of all households contributed to the design of their immediate environment with 122 suggestions and a subsequent vote. The online process lasted four months and developed a high level of civic engagement. On-site visits and working group meetings took place at the same time. The project was awarded first prize for online participation in April 2012 by Init AG and the Spiegel authorities .

Economy and Infrastructure

Economic structure

The economic structure of the municipality of Wennigsen (Deister) is largely determined by its location in the economic area of the Hanover region and its high quality of life in the area surrounding the Deister. The resulting location gives the municipality an above-average purchasing power and one of the highest academic rates in the Hanover region. Wennigsen's industry focus is on natural cosmetics as well as precision mechanics and electrical engineering in the manufacturing and processing industries as well as retail .

Purchasing power, creditworthiness, taxes

With a purchasing power index of 108.7 (2010) (D = 100), the municipality of Wennigsen takes one of the top ranks (7th) in an inter-municipal comparison of the Hanover region. The above-average value for the Hanover region (Hanover region = 107.4) proves the excellent retail potential within the municipality. In addition, Wennigsen, like the surrounding municipalities in the Calenberger Land, is characterized by a low proportion of debtors in all households. The tax rate is 500 points for property tax A, 560 points for property tax B and 440 points for trade tax.

schools

The primary schools in Wennigsen and Bredenbeck are located in the municipality . In Wennigsen itself there is the Sophie Scholl Comprehensive School, a cooperative comprehensive school that emerged from the former Wennigsen school center with an orientation level , secondary school and secondary school . The specialty of this school is that classes 5 to 7 are taught integratively. This in turn means that the students in the grammar school branch can only take the Abitur after 13 years. Since the Sophie Scholl Comprehensive School does not have its own upper school, there is a cooperation with the KGS in the Ronnenberg district of Empelde for attending the upper school there. From the 2013/2014 school year, the Abitur can be taken for the first time after 13 school years at KGS. Since the 2007/2008 school year, all-day lessons have been gradually introduced. Extensions are under construction for operation as an all-day school .

In the district of Sorsum there is a Waldorf school with an attached kindergarten .

Kindergartens

There are 12 kindergartens in the entire municipality, which are run by seven providers. There is a speech therapy kindergarten in the Degersen district and a curative education kindergarten in Holtensen. With the exception of the two smallest districts, Argestorf and Evestorf, there is childcare in every district. From 2012 to 2013, the Vogelnest kindergarten was rebuilt using a passive house-like construction. A family and service office was set up in the town hall in 2009 for all relevant matters.

traffic

Road traffic

Bundesstraße 217 runs along the eastern edge of the municipality . It runs on a bypass road east of the Evestorf district, then crosses the Holtensen district and leads west of Steinkrug over the Deister towards the Springer district of Völksen .

Transportation

Wennigsen stop

In the local area of Wennigsen there are two stops of the Hanover S-Bahn . These are, on the one hand, the Wennigsen stop with the S1, S2 and S21 lines along the Deisterstreet towards Barsinghausen / Haste and, on the other hand, the Holtensen / Linderte stop on the S5 ( Hanover – Altenbeken line with connections to Springe , Hameln , Bad Pyrmont and Paderborn ) or Hannover Airport .

The S-Bahn stations Lemmie (town of Gehrden ) and Egestorf (town of Barsinghausen) are only a few meters outside the municipality . Due to the close proximity to the Wennigs districts of Sorsum and Wennigser Mark , these stops also serve to connect the municipality to local public transport.

Several RegioBus bus lines serve the area of the municipality: Line 382 connects Wennigsen with the districts of Argestorf , Bredenbeck and Steinkrug and then continues via the bison enclosure Springe and the Springe hospital to the Springer train station. Some stub trips lead to Bennigser Bahnhof on school days . Line 520 also connects Wennigsen with the districts of Argestorf and Bredenbeck. It also serves the districts of Holtensen, Evestorf and Sorsum and ends at Weetzen train station . Line 540 connects Wennigsen with the Wennigser Mark district and continues along the Deister to Barsinghausen. Line 580 connects Wennigsen with the districts of Bönnigsen and Degersen and continues via Gehrden to Empelde , where there is a connection to the Hanover tram . Lines 521 and 522 are used for school traffic.

Air traffic

Monitoring of air traffic by the Deister radar system of the German air traffic control

On the Deister survey Höfeler ( 395  m above sea level. NN ) is a SRE-M -Radaranlage the DFS for monitoring the average airspace. There are a total of six systems in Germany that monitor German airspace. The detection radius is around 145 NM ( nautical miles , corresponds to 270 km). About 1.5 km away, on the so-called Bröhn , there are further air traffic control transmitting and receiving systems.

Bicycle traffic

In 2008, a cycle traffic plan was developed for the first time in the Hanover region together with the local ADFC , politics and local government . The aim was to strategically promote cycling. To this end, an extensive catalog of measures was developed, which was largely processed in the following years. Essential components were the area-wide signage with distance information, the expansion and modernization of the parking facilities as well as public awareness of the topic. The signage was completely implemented in 2011 on six routes with a length of 39 km and 140 signs. Around 950 bicycle parking spaces with frame holders and a central lockable bicycle garage at Wennigsen S-Bahn station were installed in the same year. Joint campaigns to strengthen mobility behavior in retail were carried out with the Economic Interest Group (WIG) . In cooperation with the state of Lower Saxony, two new bike paths with a total length of 3.5 kilometers have been built (Wennigsen - Wennigser Mark, Wennigsen - Sorsum). The Evestorf - Sorsum cycle path has been completely renovated. Further measures such as the marking of false dead ends, the installation of a lighting system on the way to the Holtensen train station (approx. One kilometer long), lowering of the curb and other small structural measures followed. To ensure a constant exchange process, a regular “round table for bicycle traffic” was set up between the voluntary ADFC and the municipal administration.

Climate protection

Wind turbines on the Vörier mountain

In 1990 wind turbines were built on the Vörier Berg . In 1998, an award-winning eco - settlement was built in the Langes Feld development area . After the closure of the Wennigs outdoor pool, the Wennigs water park was opened in 2000 with a self-cleaning regeneration pond. The formerly conventional system can completely dispense with the use of chemicals, which halved the operating costs.

The voluntary climate protection officer Detlev Krüger-Nedde has been active in the community with public relations work and advice since 2008. In 2009, over 175 energy consultations were carried out in households and companies together with the climate protection agency.

In 2009 and 2011, two public participation projects were initiated by the municipality to protect the climate, see the section on public participation .

The municipality is the only municipality in Northern Germany to have installed a wood chip heating system, which is located in a comprehensive school with around 1,000 students. It has a nominal output of 360 kW and saves 300 tons of CO 2 a year. From 2009 to 2011, all street lamps in the municipality were replaced with energy-saving lighting. This enabled power consumption to be reduced by two thirds; that means an annual CO 2 saving of 140 tons.

The Mühlendammweg promenade leads from Wennigsen Abbey along the Wennigser Mühlbach stream to the Bröhnweg , connecting the former mill ponds that still exist. At the fire station it leads past the Wennigsen Spritzenhaus , the former fire station of the Wennigsen volunteer fire brigade , which is now a center for handicrafts. Below the upper mill pond is the Wennigsen local history museum, in which, in addition to changing exhibitions on various topics, there are also permanent exhibitions on local history, old craft trades, Deister mining and the previous use of the building as a water mill.

Objects worth seeing are in summary the monastery with its Romanesque defense tower from 1150, the water park with a purely biological water treatment, the Wennigsen local history museum in the upper mill from around 1700, the works of art double helix and sundial (spiral of the life of Hugo Kükelhaus ) by Wennigser Precision mechanic Erich Pollähne , the Wennigser water wheels in Deister and the listed old customs house Wennigsen from 1822 should be emphasized.
