The Church of St. Christophorus was the Catholic church in Holtensen , a district of Wennigsen in the Hanover region in Lower Saxony . The church, named after St. Christopher , was located at Bredenbecker Straße 13. It belonged to the parish of St. Bonifatius with its seat in Gehrden , and thus to the Hanover deanery of the Hildesheim diocese . Today the churches of St. Hubertus in Wennigsen and Maria von der perpetual help in Bennigsen, each around 5.5 kilometers away, are the closest Catholic places of worship.

history

In the 16th century, the population and the church in Holtensen, first mentioned in a document in 1329, became Evangelical-Lutheran through the introduction of the Reformation .

After the Second World War , the number of Catholics in Holtensen increased as a result of the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire and other areas (e.g. Czechoslovakia). Initially, Catholic services were held in the Protestant church.

The property was purchased in June 1958, and in 1960 the conversion of the barn on the property into a church began. It was consecrated on December 23, 1962 by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen . Initially, St. Christophorus was part of the Bennigsen parish of Maria von der Immerwazierenden Hilfe , since May 1st 1997 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Bonifatius in Gehrden. In 2013 it was decided to profanate the church and the property with the church building was offered for sale. On July 24, 2014, the church's patronage festival , it was profaned by Vicar General Werner Schreer . The catchment area of the church last included around 600 Catholics from the villages of Bredenbeck , Evestorf , Holtensen and Steinkrug . A branch of the sewing machine center Elektrogeräte-Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH , a sewing machine trading house with headquarters in Hanover , has been located in the church building since 2015 . The tower of the church with its bells was preserved.

Architecture and equipment

The church was on the site of the former Basse'schen Mühlen, around 87 meters above sea level . It was created according to plans by the architect Sommer. The building from which the church emerged previously served as a barn. A stained glass window was installed at the place of the barn door on the street side , next to it was a small representation of St. Christopher, above a cross . A free-standing, cross-crowned tower with two bells was built next to the church.

After the profanation, some of the church inventory will go to churches in Lithuania , and items from St. Christophorus will also be given a new place in the churches of St. Bonifatius in Gehrden and St. Hubertus in Wennigsen ; the Christophorus statue in Gehrden, the Way of the Cross in Laatzen ( St. Mathilde ).
